This is the first s30v blade I've finished, and boy from now one they will have a perfect mirror finish before heat treat! Grinds easy and hand finishes easy, when in the SOFT state, but is a bear in the hardened state! HMMM, wonder if I can get diamond grit sand paper.

3 1/2" cutting edge with 3/4" ricasso, nickle silver gaurd, green canvas micarta handle. Hand rubed blade to 600 grit, gave up on a mirror polish or finner hand rub.

That sure is a nice one though, Will. That green micarta has a certain appeal doesn't it? Something about it. I like it for some reason!

I dont think you will find it much easier to mirror polish before H/T

The stuff is just hard to finish........period.

Thanks Guys, not sure what you mean berettaman, but the s30v comes very close to my 52100, though it's a good bit harder to sharpen. My cable damascus is only a little better than plain old 1095 in the edge holding.

I do like the green canvas though, it's great stuff

Nice Will and welcome to the wonderful and tempermental world of S30V. If she was HT'd correctly, wait til you use her; you'll be hooked.

It is a sumbeach to polish up. I have never gotten all micro scratches out of S30V.

I have to agree with the above comment. I finished two skinners in S30V after they were heat treated. Boy, what a pair of bears to finish!!!!

Yeah, you got it. You can belt finish and buff S30V to a real nice mirror but to match a ATS-34 finish figure on the customer spending more money. (there are those that can do it with less effort but I am not amongst them.)

I got a cake walk on this one I am finishing now. It is for a hard working knife and will be pounded on a lot so I am putting a 220 finish on her; and (to my suprise), it don't look bad either. This is my first satin if 220 grit can be considered that.

Well after my experiances with this and one other I just finished, I don't think I'll ever put a mirror finish on s30v, think I'll stick with a hand rubed finish and on basic work knives a satin finish.

I do like the way it performs though, great stuff.

Will,

I presume you are HT'ing your own S30V. It is pretty friendly to HT. Just get her in RAPID air quench quickly and do not temper very high; just slightly above 400 F minimum (425 F, there-abouts). She also benefits well from a cryo between snap temper and temper. Snap at about 300 F for 1 hour before cryo then temper at about 425 F followed by about 400 F (2 hours per) for about 60 HRc.

Here is one I just did for a 59 HRc chopper/cutter:

snap at 300 F / 1 hour
cryo
temper: 440 F / 2 hours
temper: 425 F / 2 hours (59 - 59.5 HRc)

Will, I really like that one ! You really put a lot of hard work into that one. I imagine you are running low on elbow grease, by now! Really, I think that finish on your knife, even though you was working toward a mirror finish, came out equally good as a mirror finish. IT LOOKS GREAT, WILL! I would leave it just where it is , my choice.
