Im gonna buy the spyderco manix 2 or xl but the steel is gonna be the deciding factor. So I need to know which one is the better steel. Any help would be appreciated.

S30v will stay sharper longer but is tougher to sharpen then 154cm. In my opinion 154cm is more relative to vg10 sharpens up quick and gets a razor edge. To be honest I prefer the 154cm I don't mind touching it up more often because its so easy to work with then again I'm not a super steel junkie.

better is a relative term to which your preferences will effect its definition. If you prefer edge retention to ease of sharpening then I would say S30V is superior. If though you like your steel to take a super sharp edge with ease and dont mind touching it up slightly more often then 154cm is the better choice. By todays standards of steel I dont think either qualify as "super steels" like they did a few short years ago but I would definitely call them both premium steel. I personally have a special place in my heart for 154cm and am actually sad it isnt used that much anymore. I would take it over the majority of steels that are currently the flavor of the week.

It's all relative to how Spyderco heat treats their steel. In some cases, one out performs the other and some heat treat where you can't tell the difference, such as Strider. You need to see if you can find Spydercos specs for heat treating both steels and make your choice from that.
Good Luck

The 154CM Manix2 is getting scare as it was replaced with S30V.

I don't think it was replaced. The two is 154 and the xl is s30v. So they're different knives that have different steel. I don't think one was replaced with the other... But I could be wrong

Older Manix 2s have 154CM. Newer Manix 2s use S30V. (Except the Lightweight which uses CTS-BD-1)

I agree with aquaman67. I have 4 Manix 2s. My XL, my standard/regular/hollow grind, and my sprint run regular size are all S30V. My Manix LW is CTS-BD1. I am pretty sure that the basic Manix 2 now comes in S30V. The 154CM is scarce (as RevDevil stated) as they are no longer the standard steel for the Manix 2 and are out of production.

Why is steel going to be the deciding factor, and how will you know to see any difference?

I was referring to the Manix2 (not the XL) it was stated a while back that it would be eventually upgraded to S30V.

I would take 154-cm all day long providing its heat treated correctly. A lot of high end makers used this steel back in the day and it was the best, now with all the choices it's anybody's guess.

I wouldn't worry about it You won't be able to tell the difference in normal usage.

For me it's for sharpening and maintenance purposes

154 cm same as ats 34 that is all that needs to be said. PS never argue with Revdevil, you will awaken him and I'll have to hide for several days. Please, I'm kinda on a countdown here.

154 cm has worked very well for a long, long time for Ernie Emerson. Not likely to change soon.
