Hey all here has been the HT for some cpm154 that I have been using.

Ramp up to 1400 and hold for 10 minutes
Ramp up to 1925 for 30 minutes
quench in aluminum plates
Dry ice for 16 hrs
400 x 2 tempers

On the instruction sheets for my even heat it says to temper at 275 x 2 and on the next page (22) it says 500 degrees. So my question is what do you guys who are more experienced in this steel use? Thanks!

Frank Here is what I do.
ramp to 1250 hold 15 min
ramp to 1650 hold 15 min
ramp to 1940 hold 40 min
quench in plates
into cryo for atleast 6 hrs
temper 410 deg 2 X

I consistantly get 61 which is what I like CPM154 at.

Pancho, I preheat to 1550 insert blade and ramp to 1980, hold for 30 min. Forced air quench down to RT. I am using Turco to protect from de-carb. Saves having to fumble with the foil. I get RC 62.5/63 as quenched and direct to LN2. A solid 63 out of the LN2. Temper 3 times for 1 hour at 400 and 61/61.5 is the result. If you do the high end temper, at 975- you will pick up a little more hardness and some additional wear resistance due to some Moly/chome precipitate. You loose a little corrosion resistance and maybe a tad of toughness, but also take advantage of the hot hardness from that temper. A little color in the finish grind and no problelma. I like the low temper for fillet knives and the high end for hunters. CPM 154 is one of the best steels out there. Also makes a killer Chef's knife. Phil

Thanks guys, I guess there is more than one way to skin a cat. I guess more testing is required, and a new dewar. I have made a few out of this steel and really like the results. I just want to get the best I can out of it.
