I have tried to do some reading and I am either thick or it is getting late. My question is I am having a knife made for me and I have a choice between CPM154 and ATS34, if it were you what steel would you pick. I am looking for edge retention and wear resistance, although they may be the same thing. So now you get to sound off about the steel you prefer, please limit it to the two choices, and I get to make an informed decision. Thanks in advance for your help.

I would go with the CPM154 . Everything should pretty be well the same except you can polish the CPM easier to a nicer finish and it should have twice the lateral strength of the ATS. Price wise should be close. Mike

CPm-154 is little different than ATS-34, it just is made using the powder metallurgy process, which increases the properties of the steel in several ways. CPM-154 is the obvious choise assuming price isn't an issue with the choice, and even then the price should be similar or a negligible difference.

ATS-34 is a outstanding steel! I'd give a slight nod to the CPM 154CM. Remember BG-42! Then S30V came out and say bye-bye to BG-42. Then, some of those knife knuts wanted the BG-42 back. The wheel goes round and round. Have fun.

Umm,???

ATS34 and CPM154 are basically the exact same alloy, with the big difference being that CPM154 is made via the particle steel powder method, which DEFINITELY makes it superior. No question; CPM154.

The, "which steel," question is always interesting. The TOP steels are just that, tops and will work well. Some, better than others. To this date though, no steel has performed as well as my good ole A-2 tool steel. Not one.

A2 is one of my personal favorites too, but that's not what the original question was. :)

To all who answered my question, I thank you. You have made my decision an informed one and I will be going with the CPM154. I would also like to say thanks that nobody started throwing around other steels that werent among the two choices. The reason I like this place is that I can ask a question, get informed answers and be able to learn something. Thanks again to everyone who took the time to answer.
