any one out there tried cpm15v?Where can i buy a small quanity of bar stock?

Elim, there may be a couple good reasons why you're not getting much response. CPM-15V is very long on wear resistance and very short on impact toughness, i.e. it will break fairly easily. Secondly, with 15% Vanadium it is likely a very though steel to grind and shape, especially after heat treating when all that Vanadium becomes Vanadium Carbides. It must eat belts like potato chips.

Take a look at the chart on this site:

Just a guess though.

Gaknife you say 15v would be low on toughness?According to Crucible 15v is tougher than 420v and kicks it's butt in edge holding.there is a ton of guys using 420v with no problems. So is it the so called brittleness or the fact that it is a bitch to grind that no one is using 15v?thanks for your input.

Elim, I wish I could help you, but you know all I know. I think most people who want a super steel with excellent edge holding will also want a steel that can take some punishment. While the edge on 15V may wear well, it might also chip easily against hard materials.

I use CPM-3V myself, because I want its superior toughness in my fighters and am not that concerned about wear resistance, although it isn't bad. It does take a heck of an edge though. Nice stuff.
