Dan,

You are one of the few makers that has worked with both of these steels. What is your thoughts on comparing these two steels, CPMD2 and CPM3V? I am a big fan of CPM3V and standard D2 but never used CPMD2. Have you noticed any problems with either steel chipping? You can read about them all day long on the internet, but until you acutally use them you never know.

Any one else please feel free to chime in.

CPM anything is already an improvement.

One thing D2 catches heat about is the large carbides in the steel which (when poorly heat-treated) can lead to chipping out.

Well, the particle metalurgy (PM of CPM) process that Crucible uses reduces the carbide size considerably (still not considered "fine"...more of a "medium" size...but no longer large). So, CPM D2 is an improved D2. Make sense?

But it's still D2....semi-stainless, toothy and still hard to sharpen.

CPM 3V is almost the exact opposite. Extreme toughness. I doubt you'd be able to make it chip out (unless ground too thin).

Personally, I've never had any D2 or 3V chip out (knock on wood). Paul Bos does mine - and if you can't trust Paul for heat-treat....can't trust anyone. ;)

Get 3V for toughness, D2 for wear resistance and toothiness to the edge.

Dan
