I just got this NIB in a trade. maybe I'm expecting too much but the blade was not as sharp as I had hoped. It barely shaved and definitely couldn't slice paper cleanly. I had to work on it for quite awhile to get it to shave.

Now this is the more expensive CQB junior in ATS34 and everyone raves about the way camillus grinds its blades so I'm rather disappointed. The tip was also rounded off. Plus the sheath isn't tight and a firm jerk would easily unsheath the knife in and inverted carry position. This worries me as this is the usual way I carry my fixed blades...

Did I get a lemon or have I set myself up with unduly high expectations?

Now it would be easy for those of you in the States to just ship it back to Camillus, but international shipping costs are very high...

I've had a pair of CQB-2 as well as a couple of the larger CQB-1, and currently have a CQB-1 (It's my FAVORITE knife!), and I have never had ANY problems with the sharpness, grinds, or sheath with any CQB knives that I have owned. It looks like its' previous owner did some "customizing" to that CQB-2 because what you describe isn't standard for Camillus. The tip on my CQB-1 is sharp, like a needle.

BTW...A "firm jerk" SHOULD unsheath the knife, as that's the way they are designed.

PS...If you didn't live clear "over there", I'd offer to trade you a PERFECT Gerber Yari for your CQB-2...

Even my CQB3 came very very sharp.
I'm beginning to question how NIB it actually is.

I emailed you glockman99. yes, actually I question how NIB it actually is - I do tend to give others the benefit of doubt. He could have received it NIB just that way too.

The blade was scratchless when I received it and the edge looked like it had never been sharpened (no marks whatsoever) but had the tip rounded. It just wasn't shaving sharp all along the edge (some dull spots here and there). So I took out the edgepro, reprofiled the edge to just under 30 included with a very aggresive edge (ie. microserrations). haven't really figured out how to make the tip pointy again though.

It's hard to describe the sheath retention - just that it's definitely not as secure as my seal pup.

I had very high expectations of this knife, and I'm really disappointed.

The handles are also a little small for me, so if anyone wants this knife, email me - maybe we can work something out.

spyken,

Your CQB2 does not sound typical. I have a CQB1 which is scary sharp (one of the sharpest knives I have), and a CQB2 which is very sharp - it shaves and readily slices paper. The fit and finish is excellent on both, including the sheaths. I do wish the handle of the CQB2 was slightly longer, and not quite so small toward the end. I just noticed the CQB2 is no longer listed on the Camillus web site. The CQB series are very nice knives.:)

so what should I do? I don't plan to send it back to the seller as unfortunately, I have attempted to resharpen it - not an easy task for me. It's still not scary sharp but will shave. Should I ask for a partial refund (say the cost of shipping it to camillus for refurb)? he did say it was NIB in his sale post and there was no mention of sheath retention or anything. to be fair, I haven't yet emailed him about the knife - I just got it yesterday and my main email account is down.

would I be unfair if I wrote him to ask for shipping costs to be reimbursed by him?

this is actually my first trade/sale via the forums.

Well, my sheath's retention (without the snap strap) isn't that tight, but that's because the kydex isn't really molded to the contours of the knife. If it did, then the knife could only be inserted one way.
It could have been that your seller bought this one from a store, which they might have given him a display piece, that might explain why the knife isn't tip top shape even NIB.

calyth, I think yours is the nylon/kydex sheath. mine's supposed to be the kydex sheath from bladetech - supposed to be real good.

oh! hm... that's odd.
You could ship it back to Camillus to have them fix it, but the shipping isn't going to be great. Talk to them and see what they say.

how quick is the usual turnaround for email by camillus customer service? I emailed them yesterday but don't want to email again even though I'm anxious....

as mentioned in anor thread, I received from Camillus a brand new CQB2 as replacement. Now this is what a NIB CQB2 should be - sharp, pointy tip, nice black micarta, very snug sheath retention.

The one I had wasn't like this at all. I hate to think it, but either the person who traded me that NIB CQB2 was himself misrepresented to, or, he misrepresented it to me. Anyways, I'm not pointing fingers at anyone, hey - everyone deserves the benefit of the doubt. I shouldn't asked for pictures first - my bad.

Bottomline, Camillus made it right. Thank you!
