I just bought a new 13 and love it. However, I noticed that
in the Texas Penal Code is is against the law to carry a Bowie
knife, which is considered a prohibited weapon. I tried to find
the exact definition of a "Bowie" knife in the penal code but
was unable to find one. The standard definition for a Bowie is a
fixed blade knife with a long blade that has a dual edged sharpened point.
The 13 fits none of these definitions but maybe an officer or someone
in the know could fill me in. I would hate to get a class a misdemeanor
for a silly definition....

Thanks

Im in no way qualified to give out info on US knife laws but I do believe if its a folder this law is not aplicable.

Dito. They have laws in taxes?;) it's funny if you are allowfo to carry concealed firearms but not a folder... But again, law makers have strange sense of humor. Ie screwing law obading good guys like us, and let the bad guys have their go, those in the financial sector and public functions in particular

I live in Texas and I regularly carry my CQC 8 and although I have never been pulled over but I have officers come in regularly and they say that the law is 5 1/2in fixed or folding.

You are correct but I'm not questioning the blade length, it is the style
of blade. The penal code mentions that the "Bowie" knife is an illegal
knife, which falls under the prohibited weapon status. Since there is no
clear cut definition of a "Bowie knife" in the penal code, I am starting to
believe it means a true Bowie knife with a 7"+ fixed blade and a double
edge near the tip. If anyone knows where to find the Texas penal code def.
of a Bowie knife I wan to know....

the bowie knife the staute is speaking of is a fixed blade and over 5.5" long, with the double edged tip, of this i am 110% sure, i would give ya a quote from my vernons Tx state penal code but my son borrowed it (he is taking a high school CJ class) and i cant find it.

generally speaking, in TX, if its a folder less than 5.5" blade ya are gonna be ok.

cant be an auto, some debate over the legality of assisted opening, cant be double edge, cant be over 5.5" blade, the daggers, dirks & bowies they speak of are mostly fixed blades, of course some folders, especially with mods, could be called a dagger, like a gerber applegate fairborn, with a sharpened false edge, could be possibly called a dagger, and cant be a gravity knife either.

but a CQC13 is fine in TX and completely legal, in fact its what i EDC, a specwar custom CQC13.

i am sure if ya google texas penal code ya can find an exact definition of bowie knife, its in there,

and i am not a lawyer lol, i do have 3 degrees in CJ though and try to stay on top of the laws so i dont find myself in violation of one.

oh, and the 5.5" limit and such only pertains to concealed or open public carry, if ya are on your property, or hunting or fishing IIRC a knife with a blade over 5.5" is ok too, probably a bowie too but it would be stretching it if it was a double edge bowie.
