Hey guys,

So I'm looking at EKI's bowies and these three are on my radar. I've had a 13, gifted it to my dad, so I am very familiar with it, and love it. I also have been looking at the Sheepdog bowie and the Appalachian. Of the latter two, which do you guys prefer (general use), and how do they measure up to the 13? The ergos on the 13 are great for me--not sure about the other two of course. May need to plan a trip down to their shop again... but man, LA traffic is such a bummer. Any info and insight is very much appreciated.

Hey, I would say the Appalachian is more your flavor. The blade is similar to the 13 but a little more belly due to a upswept tip. The handle has a similar curve to it like the 13/Tiger. The Appalachian's also has a more delicate/pointier tip to it. I have broken the tip on mine but only the very tip though (@1.0mm) when it hit my workbench on a hard downward push cut. The sheepdog is cool but it's quite different of a handle and mechanics of the pivot along with various ways to open it. Sheepdog handle is more "filling" of the 2 and not as great of a blade to handle ratio compared to the Appalachian. Both open fast with the Wave or thumbdisc being one is bearing (Sheepdog) and the other single detent (Appalachian). Both different but both great too!

Thanks Rayster! If I remember correctly, the 13 is double detent--can you confirm that? I was leaning toward the Appalachian, but I may prefer the double detent--I'm a pretty active guy and like the extra stiffness of the double detent. Do you feel much of a difference between the two? Thanks again.

The single detent is noticeably faster, smoother and less resistance. I can thumbflick any of my single detent Emersons with no wrist action with my hand on a table/workbench. If your thumbflick skills are good (flipped coins, played marbles as a kid and etc), I'll open like it has bearings. Actually faster than a couple of my spring assist knives and flippers.

Sounds like your getting a 13 again as it is a double detent though I am hunting for the few that are single detent out there in the wild. So... if ya come across one for sale...:D

You bet brother--I'll let you know! Yeah, the wave is fast enough, even with the double detent; otherwise, slow and smooth deployment is fine by me. A 13 may very well be on the near horizon again; the Appalachian is very, very nice looking however. Thanks again.

All black this time, plain edge. I really like EKI's blacked out knives--especially as they show usage...
