Hi, I am in the market for a quality folding knife and I really like the Emerson CQC-13. I am a bit concerned about its lock up though, as in researching Emerson's knives there is some question as to the locking mechanism's safety and reliability. I apologise in advance if this topic has been discussed to death on these forums but when I searched I couldn't find a definitive answer. Also, as the CQC-13 is a new model it seemed a reasonable question as to it's model specific performance. I do not collect knives so the knife would be used on a daily basis, not stored in a drawer and played with occasionaly. I currently use a Benchmade model 42, which I am happy with, but want a side opener as well. Will the CQC-13 survive daily real-world (ab)use safely and last for a reasonable length of time (years)? All information is appreciated.

The CQC-13 is one of the best all around Emerson's. I have bought more than 20 Emersons manufactured in 2004 and 2005 and all had excellent lock up. The 13 is a favorite.

Street price on the 12 is about $ 170.

If you want to spend a bit more for an Emerson frame lock, the CQC-12 is about the same blade style and has a .125 inch Titanium frame lock. Street price on these is about $ 100 morethan the 13.

yeah i agree with roshi and would probably spend the extra $$and get the '12, the '13 has a pretty good track record with lock up though FWIW. just depends on how much ya wanna spend.......

I think I might just go with the 13. The cqc-12 is sweet but its a little priceier than my wallet can currently handle :) . Anyway, I feel better about the lock up issue- it seems the current production cqc13 will do the job. thanks for the advice.
