CQC-7 Changes?

A recent Emerson catalogue lists "Improved Features" such as radiused edges, no torx screws, changable clip location, screws tapped into Ti, not just G-10, and sharp corners having been rounded off.

Does anyone know when these changes were effected and whether or not the presence/absence of Torx screws is the quick 'n dirty way of telling if the knife is the "Improved" version or not?

Bandityo, thanks for the reply. I am aware of that. My question, which I probably did not pose as artfully as I would have liked, is whether or not the absence of Torx fasteners (presence of phillips screws) connotates all of the Improoved Features ?

aarrg, tis this dyslexia that mixed my mind up. I go take more medication and brb

I'm doing this off the top of my head.

The "Improvements" are over the Benchmade version of the CQC7.

  • *No Torx or Hex screws. The knife is user serviceable using only a Leatherman or a SAK if that's all that is available
*Radiuses edges. More comfortable edges when using the knife
*Screws tapped into Titanium as opposed to the G10 of the backspacer. This keeps the body screws from stripping out
*Reversible Pocket Clip. This allows the CQC7A/B to be carried "Tip Up Correct", as God originally intended.

However, for the convenience of customers that have become used to the "Tip Down" (

) carry, the CQC7 series are factory drilled and tapped
*Blades are either Black-T or Hard Chrome (Satin) coated, as opposed to the BM Bead Blasted that is extremely rust prone

The Benchmade CQC7 is a good knife, When Ernie opened his production company, he began producing it the way he wanted it.

Hope that helps

John

The best liner-lock folder that Benchmade ever made was the CQC-7, it was built like a tank, looky at those liners...

Got to agree with that. Seems the older BM knives were better made than todays.

Still have my BM CQC-7. Blade's rusty as all hell (I know, I know - I'm a bad daddy. What can I say? I got it in H.S., and didn't know any better - by the time I DID, it was too late).

Chris:
With a blade polish and a little TLC I bet you could have a good as new Benchmade CQC7.
You being one of my valued customers I will extend an offer to you, send me the knife and I will make it pretty again No Charge.
Of corse you will have to choose between satin finish or a beadblast finish.
E-Mail me and we can talk details.

My knives!

Thanks guys for all the help.

So, if I understand everything correctly, all post-BM CQC-7s are the same. If it is Emerson made, it is the "improved" version and once we go from BM to Emerson, that was the last change in design?

I have a 1999 7A with an actual bead blasted blade and the single detent. I haven't used it since they aren't made that way anymore. My 2001 mini 7A has the new "satin" finish and double detent.

Nimrod,

To my knowledge, all post-BM CQC-7 a/b's are not the same. It seems that mid-way through 2000 Emerson started using a double-detent and changed the pivot pin so that the pocket clips are now truly reversible on the CQC-7 a/b.

I have a 2000 CQC-7B bts that has a single-detent and the old-style pivot pin with the raised screw cap. I also have a waved 2000 CQC-7B that came from one of the first pre-serial numbered batches, and it has a double-detent and the flat screw cap.

Other than those two differences (and the wave, of course) both knives have the same improved features that John described.

Hope this helps.

Wow, Kevin!! THANKS, man! See, this is why I love it here - you guys are my buds, and we all share a common love. Kevin - I'll email you when I get home tonight (I'm still at work, and I don't have your address here.)
