CQC 7 closes roughly..

Hi everyone,

I have been edc'd my 7 today for the first time and noticed that when I try to close it that the first few degrees are quite rough and not as smooth as I would like it.

Opening it is fine, smooth all the way. Closing, except for the initial movement is fine and smooth as well. I tried playing with the pivot screw to where it was really tight and I could not realistically open it comfortably to loose enough that the side will rub against the liner as I open it.

I took it apart a few minutes ago, and it looks fine. No scratches or dents or dirt anywhere near the hole of the blade and the surrounding area.. Put it back the way it was and still have that tightness and roughness on the closing.

Should I try to lube it or something? If so, what should I use and how much of it :)

THanks once again, Emerson forum!

it'll break in after a few hundred openings (no sarcasm intended)

you have to let the knife adjust...let the detent break in etc... The nylatron washers used in all EKI knives are self-lubricating and dont really need any additional...

try a small (very) drop of oil on the detent ball.

more often than not, gritty opening can be solved this way.

Thanks, is there a specific kinda oil I should be using for this? My Horseman and Karambit have opened smooth as butter since day 1 though.

anything, really.

wd40, clp, mineral oil, grease, vegetable oil, motor oil, whatever you have available. a little goes a long way.

Great advice and , yea any hardware type oil will do.
3 and 1 , etc... Doesn't have to be that shmancy lube.. :)

Yeah, but that "shmancy" lube will dry and stay put, not run all over the inside of your pocket if you use too much...... ;)

It's not a matter of what type of oil to use. If the knife has never been taken apart after a good break-in period, it needs to be disassembled and cleaned thoroughly. The grit from the ball detents scrapings off the blade mixed in with the original lubricant must be removed.

Then, reassemble it with a very sparing application of whatever lube to the blade's pivot point, the ball detents and very lightly to both sides of the spacers. That's it, nothing more, but a minuscule dab of LockTite to the pivot screw so it stays where you put it.

Only then, will you have a smooth operating folder and no oil dripping into your pocket.

In the OP's case, if the blade is rubbing against the liners, the pivot screw needs to be tightened so the blade becomes centered between the liners.

Additionally, the resistance that is felt immediately upon closure, is not dirt, or grit, it's the ball detent on the lock liner making its way onto the blade from the locked open position. That's perfectly normal and will always be that way. Perhaps a bit smoother as the ball detent scrapes a travel channel on the blade from repetition. There are ball detents embedded in both liners, but only the lock liner detent makes its way on and of the blade to cause some resistance in the process.
