Just purchased a CQC-7 drop point via a link provided in an earlier thread and was wondering if anyone knows what the edge angle is? I'm a lefty who uses a sharpmaker for my other knives and want to make sure that I'm using the stones at a correct angle.

Many thanks guys. :)

its still a chisel grind right? if so, the sharpmaker angles are wrong. when i sharpen my 7 using the stones, i do it 'freehand' and draw towards my body, edge away.

a pain at first, but when you get the angle right, its real easy.

It hasn't arrived yet, but I'm pretty sure that the drop point model is a v grind. I'll have to read up and find out.

the one i had was kind of a v grind, but assymetrical. so for all intents and purposes it functioned and sharpened like a chisel

Cool, I guess I'll give it a whirl like that.

Being a left is gonna make it a pain though I guess. Perhaps hold it with my right and pull towards me with my left? I have like zero dexterity in my right and don't trust myself to maintain a consistent angle holding the knife with my left and sharpening with my right

try holding the knife stationary and drawing the stone away from your body. same effect, just reverse the tools.

its not s std "v" grind, no emersons are, the '12 is close though.

the SM will work on CGs ya just have to hold them at an odd angle vs straight up/down.

i prefer a std benchstone myself, but the SM will work.

Which benchstone/diamond stick do you guys recommend for sharpening what is sure to be my first of many Emersons? TIA :)

i like to use a norton fine india stone to raise a burr then strop it on a gerber steel on the reverse side, but a leather strop, cardboard, or the norton stone will work fine too. a diamond rod like one made by DMT works great too, but i like the stone better as i lay the stone on a table vs holding the stick and it seems to help me keep the angle right easier, for me anyway.

for some good tips on EKI sharpening go to www.emersonknives.com

FWIW when I had my emerson (v-grind chisel edge) I ground it down using the 25 degree setting on a lansky sharpener, and it worked really well. Took long as hell though but it cut WAY better afterward.

Great news - it came in today! What a great knife. Very well made and sharp as all get out. I can't imagine needing to change the angle on this baby.

SIFU1A - sent you an email asking about where you picked up your diamond oval sharpener. :)

Thanks SIFU1A. I saw lots of diamond sharpeners on both websites. (I use NG all the time and just bought a DMT folding fine from PVK). I wasn't able to find an oval diamond rod though.

I'm a lefty and it seems like it is going to be a pita to sharpen that left sided chisel grind on my CQC-7 BBS.

Incidently, i liked it so much I bought another just to have a "backup". Emerson's knives sure are addicting. Now if i can just figure out a way to buy them on the sly from my wife.... :D

I tried using the sharpmaker on my 7A, didn't give me the angle I wanted for such a thick blade. I have the best luck with a med grit oilstone. Just lay it down til the thumbstud is nearly dragging on the stone and go to town. I've amassed quite a collection of sharpeners but in the end my oilstone and round rods take care of 90% of my work.

imho a flat stone is hard to beat for all EKI's except the '12, a flat stone and a steel to strop the burr.

for me, anyway, a sharpmaker is just too much trouble with the odd angles and all,
