Hi,
Not long ago I was looking for advice on here on which knife to purchase as a good self-defense option. It came down to the Emerson CQC-7, or the Benchmade mod 722 Axis lock-tanto. I actually bought both of them, recieved them, then handled them both and returned one. The winner? After a lot of debate, it was the Emerson. Why?
1.) The BM axis lock actually jams if you open it too fast. I didn't like that.
2.) The Emerson serrations were meaner. The BM serrations began with a nice, sharp hook, but the Emerson serrations portruded more. BMs serrations were cut well below the plain edge.
3.) I just liked the feel of the Emerson more. How do you say... Better Chi? Holding the Emerson made me think, "Man, I'm gonna CUT YOU UP." Holding the Benchmade brought to mind, "Man... I'm gonna give you SUCH A WHITTLING!"
So I kept the Emerson. The edge is nice, but it needs to be nicer. The rec.knives sharpening FAQ has a side note that stropping with cardboard is great for chisel ground blades.
Anyone have any more info on this?
Plus, to sharpen the Emerson, do I just sharpen only the beveled edge, and ignore the other side? I don't quite get it.
I would appriciate any resource anyone can give me on sharpening chisel ground blades, plus, in all of yalls' opinions, what grit do you think is best for a defensive knife?
I'm thinking razor polishing for the secondary tanto edge, and 800-1200 grit for the primary. Rememebr, the flesh is always beneath some clothing, unless yer participating in some bizzare Fight-Club inspired gladiator duel.
