Basically, I look at knife laws the way I look at other antiquated laws. Even if the law in question is of "modern origin," the thinking behind it is antiquated at best and childish at the worst.
Does that make you an "Outlaw" if you think that way? I don't know. Maybe so. I know I am in good company though. Oral sex between man and woman is still technically illegal in many places. So the old argument about putting yourself "above the law" is nonsense, some laws are realized to be antiquated or stupid and thoroughly ignored by even those in Law Enforcement.
If you want to steal your neighbor's car, that's illegal and should be. What you are carrying in your pocket to cut things and defend yourself legally should never even be a concern.
The whole concept of Self-defense depends on it. It's a Civil Right and a basic Human Right as well.
Now, if you have a right to defend yourself and you are consistently denied the weapons to make that defense a success, does the right to Self-defense even exist anymore?
Whenever legalities of pocket knives comes up in these forums, we hear even from Police Officers, "Never tell a Cop that you are carrying it to defend yourself."
Why? That's every bit as legitimate as carrying it to open boxes or peel apples. Or is it?
If you say you carry it to open boxes at work, it's a tool. If you say you are carrying it to defend yourself, it's a weapon.
So?
If you have a right under the law to defend yourself, where is the controversy?
