Hello all,

I was looking at purchasing one of these knives from a guy I work with. The blade is stamped with a date of 2001. The handle is green. He's telling me the blade has a hard chrome finish. Two questions:

1) How can I tell if the knife has a hard chrome blade finish? Is there a marking on the blade to indicate this?
2) Does the "SFS" mean "Satin Finish Serrated" and does that = hard chrome finish
3) How much is this knife worth? He says it is in mint condition and the thinks he still has the box in his closet. He's asking $175.

Thank you in advance for helping out a relatively new knife collector.

Edited to say...I got it! I really like it too. Here are some pics:

The "SFS" is satin finish serrated; and that probably means that the blade has the satin coating, I highly doubt that it is actually chrome. As far as the price goes, if you are planning on getting it for collecting the price is fair; if its going to be a EDC user I would get a newer one cheaper.

Is there such a thing as a hard chrome blade coating that Emerson uses/used? I've heard it mentioned a few places.

That 2001 model is finished with a silver metallic like coating. It coats the entire blade minus the edge. Later in the years, EKI switched to a ceramic less shiny coating known commercially as Cerkote I think.

$175 is too much, it should be around $140.

I collect 7s, and if it's in good shape, I probably wouldn't balk at the price. You don't see too many of those old green-handled 7As (or, at least, I don't).

I saw the knife yesterday and it's in mint condition with the original box to go with it. Hmmmm...what to do?

Hard Chrome looks similar to a beadblast but cannot be removed as such. Very rust resistant. I have a Specwar-A and a Mini CQC-7A in hardchrome and besides the "dull" look I am impressed. I think $140 would be a more reasonable price. The newer models of the CQC-7A with stonewash/satin and black blades are going to start at $200 (When available). Try to talk him down.

I don't have any pics that show off the finish but it's a flatter grey coating and is easily distinguishable from bare metal when compared side-by-side. If I had an extra $175 I'd snatch that bad boy up. You pay that for a run of the mill Emerson nowadays and your green one is rare as they come for a production knife.

Well guys...I went ahead and bought it. Figured what the hell. You just don't see those green handled versions much at all. I shouldn't lose too much in the investment over time.

Looks good, nice classic Emerson; I have always liked the green handles. The pivot pin screw looks like it has been polished, or it might just be the way that the light is hitting it.

The pivot screw is a mirror finish. The guy I bought it from swears it came from the factory that way.
