Is it just me or there is a general similarity of shape between CQC8 (and horseman) one Emerson side and Rift on Benchmade side? I am not implying any legal or ethical issues. I am actually interested in the following: CQC-8 seems to be combat oriented knife while the Rift is more of a utility style, while they both have similar blade geomery. Any thoughts?

I would concede a bit of resemblance around the tip, but other than that....eh. The Rift's grind is much higher than the 8, and the tops of the blades (above the bevel) are not similar. It strikes me that they may share some of the same lines but the geometry is very much different.

Benchmade has used that design for a while. It is also seen in the 550HG and 555HG Griptilian and mini-Grip.

Both designs have been around. The Benchmade is somewhat of a reverse tanto style.

The new Emerson Horseman is great!!!

They don't look similar enough to warrant any questions on my part. The actual cutting edge is about the same, but lots of models of different sizes are similar.

But now the 8 and the Horseman--those look a lot alike! :D

The Horseman is a small 8 from what I understand. Just downsized for riding horses and being a cowpoke. keepem sharp

If that was directed at my comment, I was joking. :D

You are right, though. The Horseman is basically a "mini-8". The Rift blade is basically a beefed up version of Osborne's 940 modified reversed tanto.

Here's a pic my friend Jon took of the two:

That they do, I wonder if there is a law suit in the works :)

Here's what Mr. Emerson said:

"As some of you know, I live on a ranch with horses. You may also know that I grew up on a farm. Anyway, we all know how important a knife is when you’re working around a farm and livestock. In regard to horses, a strong sharp knife is not an option, it is essential. Every cowboy knows that his knife is his lifejacket. When something goes wrong with livestock, it goes wrong fast. A knife is generally the only thing that will get you out of a wreck with your life.

So, we did our research and found that the knife design most suited to the purpose was a scaled down version of the CQC-8, with serrations. This Mini-CQC-8 still has all of the aggressiveness of the Full Size 8 but is more pocket friendly for someone on Horseback. I think you’ll like it.
