I'm thinking about ordering a CQC13. I really like the design, and it's a good size for my hand. This will likely become my new defensive EDC blade. Anyone own this model? This model isn't discussed as much as others, and I was just wondering what the general opinion of this blade was. Thanks!

i have both a custom and a production '13 and like them a lot, the '13 is my favorite production other than the CQC12/HD7, i'm sure it will be fine in a SD role.

i have a 13, and carried it on duty for a few years. it now is part of a rotation of several blades.

overall, wonderful design. useful blade shape and size. the handle is the best feeling of all my emersons. the fit just seems perfect for my hands. other than my kerambit, it is also probably the most secure grip shape of mine. virtually no chance of slipping past the guard and cutting your fingers.

it is a little large for edc, but is not terribly heavy. if your pockets can handle the wide profile, you should find it a great fit.

the only negative is see, and it is a minor one, is that while opening the thumb disc rides very close to the guard portion of the scale. this makes opening less efficient than other models, like the 7 or a100.

The 13 is an awesome Emerson. Close behind the 8 as my all time favourite Emerson. But I also have a 12 coming in so that might well change.

If you don't have an Emerson its a great place to start. You really cant go wrong with one. I have a plain edge black blade.

I heard these have thicker liners. Can I get some comparetive pics of lock engagement?

Now that the 12 and HD7 are no more the 13 is the best offering from EKI IMO. I actually like the handle better on it than the 12 personally although I have nothing against my 12 either.

Charlie Mike. Here are some shots of it for ya before and after from a customer that sent me his to convert to a frame lock. You can see the chunky lock compared to the normal liner thickness on the non lock side in this one shot. This is a knife set up from the factory and there was certainly nothing wrong with this lock when I got the folder which made me glad he can always stick it right back together as it shipped if he wants. He just wanted a frame lock so he got a frame lock. I'd own this folder from the factory if they all look like this one. It was stout!

I've had a CQC 13 for about four years now as one of my every day patrol knives. It's a darn good knife.

Pros: Thin and light for its size but very well built. Easy to clean. Practical blade shape. AWESOME handle: comfortable and secure. Fast opening with the wave.

Cons: Need to keep the pivot adjusted properly because if it's a little loose, the blade will open leading to a nasty cut on your hand and a hole in your pants. I know from personal experience.

There was a time I didn't like it very much. Somehow got a chip right on the tip, pivot was loose, and didn't care much for the chisel grind. Now I've come around to it. Had to tighten the pivot a smidge. Also sharpened it according to the Emerson website (how about that, when in doubt read the instructions!) and it's sharp as heck again.

It's now a toss-up between the CQC-13 and the Spyderco 83mm Manix as my "If I could only have one knife" knife.

My one gripe, and this applies to a lot of makers, is to provide clip holes for more than just tip up/right side carry. I know the wave feature will only work with tip up, but for a knife costing almost $200 there's no reason not to provide for a few more carry options.

+1

They do it on the Kerambits, no reason in the world they can't do it on all of 'em

The reason they dont put 2 or 4 way clip mountings on all the knives is
because the wave will only work from a tip up clip position.
They could tap the handles for left and right tip up carry like the combat
kerambits but not all the knives are as ambidextrous as the k,bit.
