Here is a glimpse of the new CQC45 if anyone wanted to see it a little closer.

I had to gauge time for these shots in between storms and got chased back under cover before finishing but I did manage to snag a few shots to compare it to the closest thing I could find in my collection size wise.

Seen here is a HD12 Comrade next to the new CQC45 serial number 004.

When the 45 arrived around 9:30 this morning I was so excited I could barely contain myself so skipping over everything else including checks for payment made to me I grabbed that and left to check it out!

As expected its flawless. 6.2 ounces of flawless perfection to be exact. Compared to the 5 ounces of the CQC HD12 Comrade its not only wider with a bigger foot print in the pocket but also noticeably heavier.

My wife thought the brown scales cheapened the look of it. Perhaps so and for what its worth I can't say that is my favorite color either. I've noted that with my stock of textured Coyote Brown G10 that I can barely give it away at times. It seems to be one of those that you either love it or you hate it completely but there is no middle ground.

The texturing is excellent though and if you were going to make a liner lock this is a great way to do it using some beefy liners. The specs say this is .090 thickness for the lock side. According to my micrometer thats not entirely accurate, at least not for this folder. The one in this one is .100 +.

The total handle thickness is also not quite what I get. Specs in the listing call for .585. I'm getting .625 for mine, and probably due to both liners being beefier than what is listed. The listing says .062 for the non lock side liner. I have not had this folder apart. I probably will not take it apart to be honest but I am pretty sure from looking at it and comparing it to what I have in stock that is.065 that its thicker than that! These are not draw backs in my mind though and in fact it just turns me on more about the folder.

If you have ever had one of those occasions where you just see a knife that you absolutely fall for the second you see it then you can understand my feelings when I first saw the CQC45. I had to have it whether it meant some couch time for being a bad boy or not! :D

Size wise the knife compares well to the 12. The blade appears to be indentical other than the stone washed finish vs the SF for the 12 shown.

I did put my skull clip on this folder because I feel it matched the finish on the blade better than the one that ships on it. Also, the blade is dead center when closed, smooth as any Emerson I've ever handled short of my 1998 SpecWar B that is so broke in its not funny! If I think of more I'll add it later. For now enjoy these few pics I snagged before getting dumped on again today by mother nature. Lots of rain here lately and we needed it.

great score STR , I know who the previous owner of that knife was glad it went to someone I know will appreciate it.

Really?! Yeah I was fortunate to snag one. I justified snagging it to let my son have it for his next trip out to the sand box. He took another custom over this one though. Didn't like the colors of the scales on this one. I can't say I'm heartbroken from that decision after seeing it but the one he took is quite nice too. :D

yeah i personally wouldn't have broke the gun/knife set apart but he said he didn't really care for the knife but loved the emerson/les baer 1911 though. I was looking at possibly getting that cqc45 too but I had another knife i was more interested in getting which is a strider AR framelock whenever it gets released

I hear ya. Thats what I read too. That he had no use for this or something. Is he a member here? Whats his screen name? Just curious.

I must admit I wondered about breaking up the set also but wasn't going to question it or make sure he really wanted to do that. I was not the least bit interested in the gun to be honest. I know thats a classic and all but I just never quite took to the 1911. I was glad he was willing to break it up cause the knife is all I wanted. I doubt many will be breaking them up so that was part of what prompted me to grab it while I could. I really thought my son would jump on this one but he didn't care for the brown much. My wife said sell it of course but I think I can hang with this guy for a time. ;) It seems to like my safe for the time being. My pocket too for that matter which is where it is sitting right now. As with anything when the novelty wears off I may sell or trade it but I rarely let customs go outside of family once I get them so it would be a rare event.

Thanks for stopping by.

I resisted that knife on the USN for weeks. That was one I really wanted as well but just didn't have the extra funds to make it happen. Congrats!!! That is a super Emerson!

My self control (and credit card) got the better of me and I too passed on this CQC-45. I was offers a chance to buy it about two days after I purchased my CQC-6 and there was no way I could swing it.

I am happy it went to someone that appreciates it.
Enjoy it.

Thanks guys. I think the reason this one appealed to me personally so much was in how its built. What I'm saying is that I've said for my whole folder making career that frills and artsy fartsy appeal, nice as they are and all, are not needed on a performing tool and I've lived by that. Arsty fartsy I am not. I mean I make them look good enough and even go a little futher toward art than I used to but really, I'm still very much about function.

Bolsters? Nice as they look and all they are just added weight both from the bolsters themselves and from the need for two to four or more screws sometimes to secure them to the frame. Thats why I am rarely putting bolsters on anything I make even though I can do it just as well as anyone. This folder weighs 6.2 ounces for example and thats heavy enough just as it sits. By some definitions its already too heavy. If it had bolsters it would be upwards of 8 ounces or more which in my opinion is unnecessary weight. If you look at my own work rarely will you see me making folders differently than this one in build and I think thats what caught my eye with it. It falls right in line with exactly my own philosophy on what a tactical peformance folder following the KISS rule of thumb for build type needs to be. (Keep it simple stupid!). This is the way I do my own and the best way to do one for someone that is really going to use it and not just display it in a case somewhere. IMO of course. :D

Wait...don't these knives come as a package with the Les Baer CQC 1911. OMG DO YOU HAVE THE GUN AS WELL!???!?!

Nah. I don't have the gun too. The set was bought by a guy and he was not interested in the knife at all just buying it for the gun apparently. Don't get me wrong. I mean I own a Springfield Armory Trophy Match 1911 and have had others but I just don't much use those, certainly wouldn't carry one and although accurate as all get out its just not my first choice and IMO a bit overpriced in most cases. Just my opinion though of course. I like the Officers ACP a lot though although I can't trust the safety on it that much.

My normal choice for a carry gun is either my Seecamp or my 32 HR Mag Air Lite Revolver.

hey glad you are enjoying the knife. i sold it because i more partial to the custom 7's and 6's that i carry. i was just keeping the knife in the safe and i figured someone else would treasure it. i bought the set knowing i would prob sell the knife.
:D

Thanks. I gave it to my son after putting some carbon fiber scales on it. At first he didn't want it but the carbon fiber changed his mind. He got the old set too though. He, like me, is not a big fan of the brown G10.

Here ya go. Pics of the CF scales on it. It was pretty handsome when I packed it up to ship it out to my son. I had trouble letting it go believe me. The lucky dog even got my last skull clip too!
More pics in my blog link of it if interested.
