What is so great about the CQC7?
I heard that the first few batches were pretty bad.
Have they improved?

Howdy and welcome!

To me the CQC-7 is a classic design, it is flat and easy to carry.
My opinion is that EKI had some minor QC problems, i did receive a CQC-7 that was made in 2002 and it was perfect as was the 2 Super-Commanders i received last week.

So, i'm pretty sure that if you buy a CQC-7 it'll be great.
And if it has any problem they will make it right.

In my opinion you cannot go wrong with Emerson knives, been carrying them since -98. Hoping to get my first custom pretty soon :)
To me the Emerson knives are somewhat rough in the finish area, but no other knife feels just right to me as my -98 commander and Super Commanders does.

Please note that there's an Emerson forum here too.

You should've done a search before starting this thread. There is a lot of info on the Emerson forum. I can speak from personal experience here. I had a 98 EKI CQC7 and the lock wasn't very good. Went all the way to the otherside in the first 2 months. I got it warrantied though for a 99 and have not had a problem since. The one I have now has the detent and is a lot smoother than my other one was.
I have a commander on the way and I really like my CQC7.

So the answer to your question is yes they have improved. Although I never thought they were bad to begin with. Next time do a search.

BOK,

Sorry i did not do a "search". As you can see from the date of my member registration, i am only a couple of days new to this forum. I do not know everything there is to know about this site yet.
please check the member's registration date before you give them such a "warm welcome" :(

i agree with TORCH, that was pretty brutal what BOK said

WELCOME TO THE FORUM TORCH!

just ignore BOK, he has nothing better to do than to pick on others.

welcome again!

:)

ok you two I've had just about enough of that...ok TORCH I'm new myself here but welcome anyway!!! there wasn't meant to be any animosity in my reply...if anything I thought it would help...anyway I'm outta here...

the 2 of you should know that emerson is a touchy subject.

people have in the past come on BF.com to post how they recieved an emerson knife and then they proceed to espouse such a litainy of complaints about the knife's grind, the G-10, how the titanium liners are cut, how the blade pivot is too tight or too loose, how because they cant sharpen a chisel grind the knife sucks, and why emerson used flat head screws or philips (the 4 prong screw)...

they do this just to start shi+ with emerson's happy customers, and then to watch the crap fly all over the place.

for the record, the G-10 on my 2 CQC-7s were perfect, the pivots were adjustable, which the trolls peobably couldnt toghten a screw, the blades were sharp and its not hard to charpen a chisel grind, and the titanium liners were fine.

as to the screws, the knife is designed so YOU, the USER can disasemble it when you want to, to clean it, and by doing so you dont void the warantee like on a benchmade.

I hated the green G-10 on one of my sevens though. G-10 should be black. other colors except red should be forbiden. Red = training knives.
unless you have a green finished pistol, keep Green G-10 where it belongs, in the dustbin of knifelore.

But thats just me.

check the emerson forum and search for some posts from 99 and 2000 in the archives if you want to read how the Shi= used to fly.

be very warned though, people have a much lower tolerance for BS today than they did before.

some shmuck named TheTaticalOne and the "attacked by a civilian" turned a lot of people REAL suspect of people coming on the fourms with low post numbers, no email and asking about emerson.

Don't worry, you just stepped on a land mine and got your foot blown clear up into your rearend.

shi+ happens sometimes. live and learn.

not adding any fuel to any flame, but thanks to jayharley & some other friendly guys, I solved my loose pivot screw problem on my CQC7BTS by using teflon tape (it works!).

I also used the edgepro (thanks ben!) to sharpen the blade to a mirror finish shaving sharp edge. Not scary sharp that it'll cut hairs without touching the skin but sharp enough to shave without scraping the skin.

the knife feels very comfortable in my hand, altho' I think the lock has moved quite a bit now - should I be concerned?

spyken,

How far across on the blade tang is the lock going? I would think as long as it is staying within the first 2/3 or 3/4 of the tang, you should be okay.

I have a 99 that was close to perfect for the last few years and just last month developed a small problem with the liner lock.. no big deal, things wear out, especialy flicking it open a few hundred times a day...sent it back to emerson and they got it back to new condition, looks like they replaced the g10, the ti liners and the screws. So far they have had the best service i have seen in a knife co. So the product may be very good but the service is even better.

Regarding Emerson knives, yeah, it's a touchy subject, and yes, mostly it's new people that bring it up.
I personally think it's only new people bringing up the subject because the people that have been around awhile have found that it's just not worth it, and don't really care either way.

This of course does not mean that there are not problems with Emerson knives, or that the QC is getting any better, or worse for that matter.

I have always found it to be a bit funny when someone who has never ever had anything but a perfect Emerson knife finally admits that there were some QC problems in the past but not anymore. I'm thinking to myself "How would you know there were problems in the first place, and how would you know they are now fixed?"

I myself generally don't even bother to post in the Emerson threads anymore, for several reasons.
1) I have not owned or handled any recent generations of Emerson knives, so I can't comment on current QC, or lack thereof.

2) Every Emerson knife I have owned, except 1, had serious QC problems.

3) It's just not worth the hate mail and vitriolic replies from the "usual suspects" that invariably ensue.

4) I don't have any use for a Maker/Mfg that benefits from the use of others patents and yet refuses to let anyone else benefit from such a broad and sweeping patent, such as the wave. I do of course understand why, as I don't think Emerson would be selling any waved models if any other Mfg. were allowed to use the patent also. Self preservation is a powerful instict.

That's my opinion(s) on the subject of Emerson knives.

I own 3 CQC7'so I guess you could say I like them.:) 2 full size and one mini.I like the grip, just feels right in my hand, its a solid, strong built knife that can take some use that well a folder is not meant to do,but some of us end up in a situation where you use what you got and I'm glad I got my 7.

Now my first 7 was as perfect as one could hope for in a production piece. The other 2 have spacers that are below the liners and scales a fair amount and the flat side of the pivot pins are countersunk quite aways into the g-10.I can live with this, the knives do what I need them to do and do it well.It also the price one pays by ordering off the net and not being able to handle them first.

Welcome aboard. Don't let any warm welcomes about doing a search bother you. If all anybody ever did was search, we wouldn't need a forum, just an encyclopedia.

Emerson knives are cool but as posted above, if others had the Wave, there very well might be a lot less of them sold.

It's a knife that ya have to have ! because !
G-10 looks smooth design just feels good
It's a great knife, It's TOUGH ;)
