Hi everyone. Just took delivery of my first Emerson, a CQC7A
SF. The initial impression I had of the knife was that it is indeed
robust. Which it is. What it isn't is sharp. Now I have had knives in the past that were somewhat dullout of the box but this had a rolled edge to it. I am not talking a little burr that needed to be stropped off the back edge. This edge was rolled it seemed almost back on to itself. To say I am bummed is an understatement. I have been working on this edge for the better part of 2.5hrs with my Lansky diamond hones at 30 deg. To really no avail. I have gone through the whole gamut of hones in the set. From extra coarse to break the new edge in to ultra fine for a high polish. As I am doing this I have noticed that the edge as it is ground varies from 30 deg towards the back of the knife to what seems to be 27-28 deg towards the middle and front. Also the grind on the primary edge appeared to be a rough tool grind. Really rough feeling along the cutting edge. You could rub your finger on the side and feel the toothiness and then along the edge itself to feel how the steel was rolled.
Well when first observing this on the knife I called Emerson Knife out on the left coast. Pretty much the response I recieved was to sharpen the knife. Well no kidding. I then asked if I should even do this as it is a brand new knife. The womnan I was talking with stated I should have read the directions before calling and if I have aproblem after that to call back if I can't get it. I asked her if me attempting to sharpen the knife would in anyway void anything on the warranty. She said as long as I set my Lansky to 30 deg I should be fine. After all it is a knife and they do need to be sharpened. Couldn't agree more. Well called the dealer to discuss the issue with him and all I really got was what mediocre knives the Emersons are. Kind of bummed my gig as he was right there telling me all sorts good things about them when I wanted to spend my cash on one. But I am not here to bash any one or anything although it probably does not sound like that. I like the knife and would like to make it work for me. Just need to get it sharp. Any help in this matter will be appreciated. Keep'em sharp
