Looks like CRK has been listening to the comments because as you can see the newer one, on the top has a larger cut out to the thumb can get a better grip on the lockbar.

New one on the top.

Everything else is the same though.

I wish mine could be sent in to have that done. I hate using the knife most of the time because it is a pain to use. Other than that I love the knife.

The thing about CRK, they are always changing to make things better for us. :)

is this the one you were talking about having the s35vn? i gave in and just bought one cause when talking to heather or jessie on the phone they said the s35vn umnumzaans wouldn't come in till much later D:

I have actually grown to prefer the old shape, I found the new skinny lock bar harder to manipulate, but a larger champher on the non locking scale would help with that. I also see they have a hole in the blade for the detent rather than a dimple now too, not sure why though ?

I really didn't have any trouble with first set up . Do you notice it at all in grip ???

Better blade retention I would think. :)

Spoke with Jessie yesterday and she told me it will be a few months down the road until the switch to S35VN is made.

Personally I like S30V as a user steel so I went ahead and ordered it anyway.

Not really all that noticeable to me.

I have two of the older style and it does not bother me at all. In fact I have mine a little tighter (more drag) so I can feel the opening and closing very well. But I just made a deal on a CR/Wilson Startac Umnumzaan, should receive it sometime next week. The new one has a birthdate of March 22, 2011 and it has the newer cutout making the bar more accessible. So I will soon find out if I can tell the difference to a point where I would choose one style over the other.
Oh, did I mention I am getting a StarUmnumzaan soon :)!

I just looked at the birthday card on my recently acquired Umnum - Jan 2011. It has the smaller cutout.

I'll have to update the recent comparison I just did!

That's weird Ankerson. Mine has the April 20th 2001 BDay like your card said but is in fact the smaller cut out. I purchased it the end of April or first of June. What is in the inside of your scale on the new one stamped as? Mine does have the hole thru the blade though.

I've come to the conclusion that there is no way I'll ever be able to close my Zaan with one hand. I don't think the new style would make any difference at all. The lockup is so solid, and the purchase is so small, that an arthritic geezer like me will never be able to deal with it.

However, I'm totally OK with a two-handed close :)

Yeah the older one with the smaller cut out is dated April 20, 2011, the one on the bottom in the photos.

O, didn't realize you had procured another one! Nice. This one is really about the smallest handle I could deal with on a folder. How does the newer cut out affect the feel in the hand?

Can't really feel the difference in hand. :)
