This ones on it's way to it's new home in a couple of days......
Here's the sheath for the CactusRose Bear Jawbone Frontier fighter that's been lurking in the background of the UB Forge Pipe Hawk pictures.
A little background -
I sent this blade design along, which is based on the early French style trade blades, to Gib the "senior member"
of our team. Gib hand forged the blade, adjusting the size slightly to better fit the jawbone's size. After forging, Gib final ground the blade leaving his rustic forged spine finish - all work was done with his "normal" high quality! The blade is fairly thin, about 1/8" thick, and 7 7/8" long, with a distal taper for a nicely balanced and quick in the hand fighter.
Gib then sent the blade and bone blank to me. After age etching the blade, I fitted the bear jawbone grip to the blade in the frontier manner with pine rosin and a copper pin. Frontier style carving was added and then the whole thing was given an aged patina. A buffalo rawhide and sinew "bolster" with some copper/bone bead dangles finish off the grip.
The sheath is in the style of the Metis, the mixed bloods of the Northern Plains. It's buffalo rawhide and smoke tan buckskin over a vegtan liner. The cuff at the top was beautifully beaded by my wife Linda (she REALLY out did Herself on both of these pieces !) - the body and edge beading was done by yours truly. Other decoration includes staining the body with red ocher mixed with bear oil, brass tacks, bone & copper beads, tin cone tinklers, and horsehair.
Hope you enjoy looking at it as much as we did making it......
