crack on handle

Hi Guys

The handle on my Maul got a crack, I presume there is nothing to do but change the handle. Should I put tape on the new one to make it little more strong? I have missed some strokes and hit the handle in the past but, not when the crack was developed, I was trying to split some olive wood but has a lot of knots. Would be best to use a wedge insted of the maul?

Thanks

If it's a lengthwise crack or split you can always tightly wrap with copper or brass wire (most folks merely use hockey tape) to buy you some more time and use. If the crack is across then yes it's new handle time. What's nice about splitting wedges is you can tap on them at your own pace without wearing out your arms. A second wedge in there is also that much more persuasive in getting ornery stuff to come apart.

As kids, when we got old enough we used to have to split wood as a punishment. My dad taught us well but we were kids and everyone misses from time to time (or a punk kid may try to intentionally overstrike to end his punishment sooner :D ). We had these on all of our axes, mauls and sledges. 15 years later the rubber is still good and flexible. They work well!!

I have no affiliation to either of these sites, found them from a quick Google search:
