I am restoring an older knife. It has an antler (I think) handle with a crack in it on both sides. The crack does not go all the way end to end on either side. It is dirty, but not beat up and would make a nice knife to clean up, minor restoration, and use. The cracks concern me a little, as to how I might finish that part of the handle and not compromise integrety.

Do I just smooth and blend, or do I need to use an adhesive first? Appreciate any advice.

Some people have good results using CA (super glue) as a filler adhesive. A few coats and sanding and you should be in business.

It kind of depends on how bad the crack is. Pictures would help. Superglue would work if it isn't too large. If it affects the integrity of the knife then replacement sounds like it is more in order.

If you can, post some pictures and I'm sure someone can offer good advice.

If the crack is large, and you can clamp it shut, epoxy would be the best thing to use. Superglue works great on small cracks.

I hadn't thought about superglue. I;ll try that and let you know how it worked out. Thanks for the suggestions.

The very thin type is the way to go if it's a fairly small crack, use a scalpel blade to run some of the glue into the crack - capillary action will draw the glue all the way in. If the crack is too big, move up to the gel type super glue. Once the glue has hardened, it is very hard, and just like plastic.
