cracked one

I am taking a break right now. Just got done tearing off a couple nice stabilized Amboynia scales with 5 pins and a thong tube before the epoxy set up. I had just finished putting the final tap on the thong tube to set it and noticed the wood had split around the tube. Damn. I thought what the hell -- leave it, for about 2 seconds and then madly started ripping the thing apart. I feel better about accomplishing (an unscheduled) semi-destructive test now. Those were a bitch to knock off. Both scales were a loss but at least I feel better about setting a higher standard and not leaving a cracked scale on the knife...I'm thinking about going to get a beer now. Anyone else care for one?

Yep, done that...more than once I hate to say. The F drill works wonders as stated. I either rip em off and start over, or I put the knife in the kitchen drawer. I'm startin to get a good supply of knives I can use myself.:D

"F" bit is then. I just got an A-Z set last week and hadn't bothered to even use it yet. I will now. Thanks.

Another problem that is sometimes overlooked, is if you drill the holes in your handle material using the hole in the tang as a guide, you MUST have both holes in perfect alignment when you put the knife together, that is to say both must be perfectly straight. I ran into problems with the cracked feature a few times and started:
1) Drilling the hole in my full tang oversized
2) Drilling only a small hole in ONE side of the handle for the thong hole(centered of course) when epoxying them on.
After the epoxy hardened I would drill thru the small hole with a slightly larger drill and then go to a F drill for a thru hole. That way I would never end up with two holes that were slightly off kilter from each other. Hope that makes sense.
