Found a nice Schrade I want t a hardware store. Old display with bone scales. It has a small crack near the center pin . Will this crack most likely get bigger with time. Don't want to buy it and the handle fall off later.

I'm no authority but if the cracks been there a long time it is probably pretty stable. Maybe it is or maybe it isn't stable is the best I can offer. Changes in heat and humidity can affect such things. Especially rapid changes.

As a real life example I have been using the knife I posted here:http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...Schrade-END-DATE-8-12?p=10921044#post10921044 for a while now and have not been "babying" it. The crack hasn't changed and I bet it's been there for over thirty years now.

The sign in the display case says jigged bone but I'm not so sure it not delrin. Wouldn't it be unlikely delrin would crack around the pin?

I've seen a lot of pin cracks on Schrade Delrin knives. Especially center pin to spring. Not a big deal really. A bone handled Schrade USA knife in the wild would be quite a score. I've looked at a lot of old displays and never ever found a jigged Delrin knife for that matter.

What is the pattern number and what is the exact stamp? Also, what is the asking price? I would get it if it not too much.

It is a 233 and priced at 35.00. Still not sure if delrin or bone as card says. What do you think. Also do those cracks on center pins tend to spread. Thanks Hawk

I have a bone 233, it has quite a bit of red in the color. The Delrin tended to be brown and tan or dark brown, but sometimes Delrin has reddish tints too. If the shield has SCHRADE WALDEN or SCHRADE engraved, it's Delrin, but if it's blank, it could be either bone or Delrin. If it's bone, the tang stamp will definitely be SCHRADE WALDEN stamped, though Delrin examples had SCHRADE WALDEN stamps during the 60's and early 70's . A mirror polished front on the clip blade would lean towards bone too. If it is Schrade NY USA stamped, or SCHRADE USA stamped I would lean towards Delrin as well. Bone handles are usually a little shinier, and the jigging is a little crisper on a new knife.

Delrin

Both are SCHRADE WALDEN NY USA stamped with 233 on the back side

If it was bone yes. If it is delrin, probably but I'd try to negotiate a lower price.

I bought it. It is in unused shape but not bone I think. The shield has a schrade imprint and tang has Scharde then under Ny USA and under 233. It has very nice coloration with some reddishness at the ends. I carry it some doused with Corrosion X, can't take it with you so might as well enjoy. Both the 233 and 293 I have bought lately have prettier dye than the 881. The 881 has tannish coloration at the ends much like the Ot sawcut color.

That SCHRADE engraved shield and a Schrade NY USA three line stamp date the knife in the late 1970s most likely. For sure Delrin time frame.

Those Delrin Schrades were notorious for pin cracks on the center pin. They are usually very stable, I don't think I have seen any that have got worse. Nice score...

I think I read In Orvets listing for 233 where the last year made was 1979, so at least 34 years old and new. I've been lucky. I have quite a few Schrade folders and this is the first with a center pin crack or any crack.

My Hp camera broke. Have to try to get the wife to take pics with her camera then remember how to get them on the forum. Been too long since I've posted pics. If I do I post, I'll post all the open stock I've got the. 834,293, 881 and 233. Thanks for interest.

Funny she gets the electronics I get the Schrades. I think I got the best deal. By the way, sometimes you wonder how to come up with a user name when you sign up with the forum. I happened to be watching an old jimmy Stewart western of the same name at the time so I thought why not. I thought John Wayne was the better cowboy but Jimmy Stewart's westerns had better a better storyline. Don't you think.
