These are on pretty good sale at the big leather store, my question is this. I'm just getting started on stamping and stuff, will I see the difference between this maul, the non-pro version that is 1/3 the price or a hammer? thanks for your help, Dan

I like 1.5 lb mauls. Have two of them. A maul is a definite step up from a hammer, your tools will last longer, you will last longer and much less chance of the dreaded stutter stamp. Nichole has two 1 one pounders that she almost never uses. She uses a 1.5 too. I have a 3 lb one used only for punches. I've not used a tapered head one like Tandy is seling but that seems useful. I do have one with the rubber handle and I like that.

I was using a hammer until a few weeks ago. I just bought a Poly-mallet from Tandy (it's yellow with a wooden handle) -- it is definitely a step up from the hammer. I bought the larger size. I don't do much tooling yet, but it has definitely improved the quality of how my maker's stamp comes out. Not sure how the mallet compares to the maul, but I'm happy with it so far.

I have a pound maul and a 2 pound maul for sale right now. I just bought tapered mauls from Barry King. I would be willing to offer a great deal if you wanted both.

The Grizzly tool is one I've been wondering about for a while now, they say that the strike is quiet and that is most attractive to me. I do not like the smack of the poly maul that I have.

Good to hear that I'm not the only one looking at them :)
