A friend had a rusted axe in the back of his pickup. I offered to clean and sharpen it.
The head logo reads "True Temper RED WARRIOR Kelly Works" it is a New Jersey pattern.
The handle "CRAFTSMAN 31/2 - 4 LBS 51001 S.B. AXE" The handle is a faded green paint.
I am trying to find more about the heritage of this axe.
To keep the original handle, that is weather checked, how do the save the Craftsman stamp?
I am also an amateur knife sharpener, belt sander, oil & water stones. This appears to be a great site and forum for me.
Thanks

The handle is a Craftsman branded replacement handle from Sears made for a 3.5lb-4lb single bit axe, it is not original to the axe.

I would just scrape it down with a sharp knife, and give it some boiled linseed oil.
