Hi guys...im just curious about an old craftsman axe my dad has and im wondering how they stack up in the Axe community. It obviously has sentimental value but other than that are they known for being of good quality.

I would guess it really depends on how old it is...im no expert but the older ones I have had were quality. I don't know when they switched over their production methods though...I remember reading a post on here about the age being determined by the craftsman stamp or at least trying to. I believe Square_peg started it.

That should get you moving in the right direction...I'd search it out for you but I'm in a brief...try the search forum function for something like "craftsman stamp age". It should come up.

What he said. The one I have dealt with tho, was probably made no more then 20 years ago. Had a plastic handle. Needed to be thinned out but the steel was OK. Better then the hardware store junk of today, but not quite vintage steel. I would take that axe over any hardware store ones today.

I just noticed that the Craftsman Stamps thread is currently on this first page. There will be lots of info there.
