Craftsman/Sears 3-in-1

This looks like a good entry unit for someone on a limited budget. The 3HP is,of course, bogus. It is about a 1HP actually, which is still good enough. These type of motors usually loose a lot of torque at low speed. You can get any belt made in 2X72 in the 6X48 size (but they cost more).I would like to hear from anyone who has used one of these?

Looks like a great combination of tools, but you are right, 200 pounds is a little heavy. My "workshop" is a B&D workmate that is set up on the back patio and taken back down after each use.

Have to wonder, also, if the drum sander would get in the way of working longer knives on the belt sander side.

You can remove the drum sander from its collet, but the whole affair looks sorta crowded. If the motor craps out, you've lost 3 tools instead of one. Still a good idea though.

Me reckons that monster real estates of 12" disk and 6x16", or so,
will be just right for flattening stuff. Throw in a vari-speed and respectable
power and you got a winner. The upright spindle might be great for tighter
finger-curves and things like that. I wonder if one could turn off the oscillating
movement, when needed, and then mount a disk grinder onto the shaft, in
horizontal position, making an adapter, if needed.

I'd probably want to remove the table assy and expose the entire 12" disk.

And, far from being done here :), how about extending the spindle past
the driving wheel of the sander, to where a pulley can be mounted on,
so you can drive your 2x72, @ "3 developed HP" and varispeed. Sweet !

I'll swing by local store and see of they have it on display.

I notice that the 4" by 8" model indicates a 5/8" oscillating stroke or stationary spindle operation. the 6" by 12" does not say the same. Seems the stationary operation would be great, as you say, for those tight curves.

Just came back from a local store. They don't have them yet, but the manager man did say he heard of them and there's upcoming model change where whole bunch of new machinery will make it to the stores in time for the fall season.

I don't want to buy one w/o seeing it in person first.
