Craig, any news on the Dr. Gyi seminar??

hey this sounds cool. didn't know it would be like a big campout. if my friend can go that would be perfect-he hunts and fishes a lot up in Canada and has lots of the essentials for camping out. i'm more domesticated although still possessing a wild streak, so it would be a cool outing. i'll put in for the time off in case i'm working that weekend; hospitals are wierd that way, very hard to get weekends off! i guess for ceremony i can bring the CS ABA kukri? what would you suggest for a basic training kukri? i'm looking for not-excessively expensive but still functional. will pay if i have to, cause you can never have enough good toys, right? do you suggest bringing the CS kukri, will it be safe in a campground? just wondering, haven't done this kind of thing so don't know the structure or if i can keep stuff nearby..what was the viking saying: a warrior never takes a step away from his weapons... not that i'd ever, ever claim anything at all similar to being a warrior. but it sure helps to take lessons and instructions from them! Yes, it would be an honor to meet you, as well as Dr. Gyi, although i have heard that he can be a ballbuster (in a good way); hope i can get the time off. then i have to get the stuff together. BDUs and a beret, huh? hope i can get some pictures of myself in those; my wife will get a hoot out of it! i'm a federal employee, but not a serviceman; the closest i've gotten to BDUs is helping our military men in and out of them in the hospital where i work! seriously, hope to make it; have to figure out bus schedules if i don't end up taking a car. any idea how long of a trip it might be from the Scranton-Poconos area of Pa? sorry to bug you so much...thanks so much..

Does anyone know why Bando people stick to Cold Steel khukuris? Is Burma at war with Nepal or something?

i had ordered the CS kukri before i became a member here and wasn't aware of all the different manufacturers of these items. i won't be doing business with CS anymore anyway because of how they screwed me when i wanted to trade up from the light kukri that broke pitifully up to the regular model kukri they carry. the CS in Cold Steel definitely doesn't stand for Customer Service; just my opinion. anyway, my friend had handled one of these kukris and said it was high quality and to give them a chance; have it sent (not from CS but from Cutlery Shoppe, i was able to trade them and get the remainder charged); he said see how you like it. well, i am sold on this knife. for me it's an excellent addition to my toys. haven't been able to compare it which is why i'd love to be able to use the excuse with the wife to get another one for training - gee honey, all the guys at the seminar will have one to beat around and train with; i'll be the only one without one! hope it works... just need to know what model (i guess from GH, they seem extremely reputable) will be the right blend between price and function.

BTW, for what it's worth: i have some excellent Cold Steel products, don't get me wrong. i know bad heat treatment happens; we're all only human after all. i just didn't get treated right when i wanted to trade up for a more expensive model after they admitted i had a bad product. they'd make more money, the light kukri would be scrapped, and i'm a happy camper without waiting months and months to reconcile problem. and i know my friend was able to get a problem fixed "right" by them; similar circumstances. so i do still respect a lot of what they turn out. just my two cents

Kelt: I look forward to meeting you. I'll be wearing some USMC utilities, as I don't own any black fatigues or berets (I spoke to Dr. Gyi, and he said this was fine).

Incidentally, Dr. Gyi asked me to bring a bunch of my khukuris with me. I do suggest, however, a WWII for training, as it is what many of the Bando people I've dealt with chose.

And from what I've been told, the regular CS "kukri" is a good knife (I've only seen the light model in person). I don't like the light model, as it is too thin to do what the khukuri design is best suited for: chopping (anybody feel free to disagree).

if i can rig this up right, can you tell me how much one of the WWII models goes for? when and if i get my AL i may be needing one! if i confirm going would you be able to hold a nice one for me? BTW, are their regular joes like me going to this also; or am i going to be clueless at some point? and does the Dr. have any arrangements with hotels, or are we just going "au natural?" oh and you haven't held one of the Bando Assoc. kukris from CS? well, guess i'll have to bring mine with me, huh? then i can get your opinion on how it looks.
