Hello, this https://imgur.com/a/73Yr7UR 2x72 has come up locally for 700$ cad. Would i be wasting my money on this over similarly priced commercial versions? Thanks in advance for any advice!

Description :2 x 72 belt grinder. Comes with 1 hp motor, currently wired for 220. Can be converted to 110. Comes with close to 50 (estimate) belts belt rack included. Will throw in a 3 hp 3 phase motor, I bought it convert it to a VFD drive for the grinder. This is a solid machine.

That is almost the same as:
Car for sale. Runs, has four tires. Will throw in a spare and jack.

No way to know if it is a good deal without a brand, age/condition, photos, etc.

Looks like you're in Canada so I don't know exactly what your other options are but $700 would be a good start at saving for a 2X72 like Northridge, Pheer, Esteem etc. If you can hold off I'd save some more and look at those other options.

I missed the link.
That looks like an old two-wheel glass edge sanding belt sander a friend has. His has a water spray to cool the belt. It isn't very useful for knifemaking. I would pass on it unless he will drop to around $300.

You could easily build a comparable unit for less than $700. 50 Belts are worth anywhere from $250 to $650 depending on what they are and if they're brand new. I'm willing to bet they're mostly roached. For that money I'd pass but if you talk him down to a few hundred

Funny, I was writing a reply and was going to suggest offering $300 but no more. I would assume that a unit like that is not nearly a versatile as a regular 2x72 that most people have with interchangeable components and tooling arms. I do see that it has a contact wheel.

50 brand new belts could be worth $250 to $600 but in all likely hood, that means 40 used / roached out belts and 10 news ones.

It's hard finding stuff in Canada but $700 seems too high.
