Crap! I dinged my blade - now what?

I just noticed that I dinged the edge of my prized SDS Nessmuk. It isn't rolled or chipped, but now there is a small ripple along the edge of the blade where it must have contacted something hard - the last time I used it was to make an impromptu fire outside and the wood was all frozen solid. It doesn't impair the function of the knife, but it bugs me anyway.

Thanks - I'll give that a try (now why didn't I think of that?). The ding does look like what you might get on a kitchen knife if you hit a bone or something.

Sorry to hear about your Nessmuk. All I would do is probably sharpen it out naturally when it needed it. It would be really cool if a knife steel would correct the problem as dawsonbob suggested!

Good luck!

Just takes some elbow grease. Think of it as an opportunity to regrind or reset the bevel. I just did this with my SOD which had some nasty chips that I can't quite recall what they were from. Took it to a course diamond stone first to work out the chips and then reshaped it all and convexed it. About 45 min. of work.

 Ditto to that. This is a good (in fact, perfect) opportunity to motivate oneself to begin to learn the fine art of re-profiling. I understand sending it back to the maker to have it re-done, if you're not comfortable attempting it yourself. But, once you know how to re-profile a blade, all of a sudden, all those horrible nicks, dings, ripples and such become almost a moot issue, especially for a true 'using' knife. Only a safe queen would be in jeopardy in this situation, but real 'using knives' are inevitably going to get bruised & dinged up sooner or later (probably sooner). For me, I've come to look forward to 'fixing' my edges when I've found them to be less-than-perfect (in my eyes anyway). I've deliberately bought some old beaters off eBay, for the sole purpose of seeing just how sharp I can make 'em. It's fun! :D

Foilist, I just got back in town from the SHOT show in Las Vegas and was trying to catch up on some stuff when I found your thread. The offer still stands if you would like for me to fix the blade up for you. I'm curious to know if the problem was corrected.

If it's possible can you post a picure or even send me a picture so I can get a better idea of what happened? I'd like to make sure that it wasn't a problem with the heat treat.

I'll send you an email in case you don't see this post as well.

Thanks,
SDS
