This JUST happened.

Dodo dropped on a tile floor. The tip hit first and broke off. Absolutely ruined. Huge chunk of the blade lost, the tip and like 1/4" of the edge. I'm so bummed out. I'm 100% sure this can't be worked out on a sharpener and I don't have a grinder.

It's bad folks, it's bad. This isn't a little nick it's the whole tip plus a healthy portion of the edge. Just ruined it.

I am so bummed out now. I don't have the tools to fix this. Maybe when I visit my parents next and get a hold of my dad's tools I can remedy it. :grumpy:

That sux. I'm surprised I haven't done the same thing. When I had a Ronin I often saw (in my mind's eye) the knife falling in slow-motion, tip-first onto a nice hard surface. It never happened and I traded the Ronin.

The worst part is I'm pretty sure fixing this is beyond my meager skills. That's a very small piece of steel with a very strange shape. Even if I did fix it, it will never be quite the same.

Hey, you know I've been dying to know what a straight-blade Dodo would look like. Send it over and I'll have a go at it for you!

Chris

Actually I did have a thought... I know Spyderco can replace a clip for some many dollars I wonder if they'll do a blade swap for any amount of money. That's what I'd have to do basically to restore the Dodo. I'll try to contact them sometime here soon. The worst they can do is tell me no.

I believe you can have the blade of the military replaced for something like 20 bucks (not sure on the number), so you can probably do the same for the Dodo.

Just contacted Spyderco through their web site to see if I can get a yes or no before calling or sending it in. Let's give them a week to answer.

From their literature, Spyderco "doesn't replace blades on most models". But this is an American made screw-pivot knife, so I'd say your chances are pretty good. :)

The one downside may be the lock. There could be a little grinding here and there to get the locks to work right, but I guess you'd probably be sending the knife in anyway, so maybe that doesn't matter. Good luck and keep us posted! Nothing sucks worse than having a knife break for a stupid reason. The Dodo point is nothing, so trauma will have some bad consequences. It cuts like nothing I've seen (or felt, unfortunately for me!) before, though, so there's the tradeoff. Maybe the next evolution of the Dodo is a 1/4" thick blade with an armor piercing tip. :D

Hi Deadman.

send it it.

Please include a note that says I said to send it in and I would like to see it.

Wow the president himself! If nothing else I'd like to send it in just so you can research it. I don't consider it a fault in the materials or workmanship at all, just a spot of bad luck.

That sucker hit the floor just right when it fell.

Talking about dropping a Spyderco,I dropped my S30V Military tonight at work. Was cutting wrap off a pallet of Dt Pepsi 2 lit and somehow I poked a bottle and it sprayed all over me.At the same time the knife flew out of my hands and hit a steel rack twice with its tip hitting the cement floor. All the posts about the tip of a Military being week are bull. The only damage was some VERY slight chipping along about an inch and a half of the edge.A light sharpening on the 204 had it as good as new.
