Took my Sage Axe down to the steel.

I stripped it in like 5 minutes with Ace's Gel Stripper (cheapest) and a plastic putty knife. Then I got a 3M sanding disc kit that attatches to a drill and went at it with my cordless 12v. It didn't get too hot, but it heated up a bit when I switched to my plug in drill. Then the hand sanding began. There sure are a lot of surfaces on this thing to sand. I've been sanding on it now forever. I'm done for now, but I want to smooth out all the pits to a satin finish. Is that even possible with SR-77? They seem to be bottomless.

I was imagining that since there was a Scrapper 6 LE (same steel) that it was possible to get a finish on it that wouldn't rust. I probably have to sand it smooth, right? It's very shiney in person. I love it like this.

When it comes to sanding, it just seems to go on and on and on and on and... well, you get the idea.

The SR101 seemed pretty easy to get smoothed out. The mini-corrugations from CNC on my SJTAC have been a pain! It is coming along.

Post some more pics after your arm gets tired again. :)

(Shoot! Wish I knew you were gonna strip it. I would have traded my OEM-CR for the Sage since the coating was coming off anyway. ;) )

Yeah, the coating starts coming off with even one use, right? I used this one on an overnight, and got a good wear going. I may just start doing this to all my users. They look so great in satin finish.

This steel is prone to spotting. I don't know about the SR-101. Is it also as prone? They all have the dimples under the coating though; I guess it happens during the heat treat? Getting it to satin is a beotch. I've heard that the heat from sanding discs and dremels can mess up the heat treat. Regardless, I went to town on this Axe with a 40 grit disc and a hand drill before I started hand sanding with 220. I did dremel the spine, finger grooves, and edges between the handle slabs. It definitely got hot, but it's getting pretty smooth. I'm assuming it needs to be smooth or it'll spot easily? I'm afraid to leave it like this with the dimples, ya know?

DTM - It is looking good! I have used this as the guide whenever modding any of my blades: Never let it get so hot I can't hold it in my hand. If the steel is too hot to touch, I've let it go too far. If you can still hold it, you're good. Just take your time and have fun.

(SS - He only mentioned SR101 in ref to some rats. His first post details correctly that the CR is SR77. You are *both* correct. ;) )
