Actually, some time ago after reading about the Crawford survival staff, I was quite keen on it.
Unfortunately, I was not so keen on the price even though I understand the maker had put in a lot of time and effort. So the price is probably quite fair.
So being an improvisor of sorts, I went to the nearest hardware shop. Scrutinised some iron pipes on sale and identified the one I wanted.
I had the pipe of specific width cut to specifications of two different lengths. Each has a special part that could join up the other. Altogether that gave me about 5ft long of staff.
I went home, took out a can of black paint and gave it several coatings. Now I have a very low-tech but quite effective staff. If I want to add a few survival items, I could just pop over to the sports shop and buy the items I need.
It is not a 21st century tool but I am quite satisfied with my own creation.
Sarge, you should actually try it. Nowadays, when I go for my evening walks, I carried the one which measures about 38inches. The weight of the blackened staff helps me to strengthen my wrists and forearms. A mini-exercise tool, so to speak.
The longer staff weighs about 7lbs.
