Crazy auction prices

Why is it that some of the very common models of Buck knives sell for insane prices at auction? I don't mean the truly rare or vintage ones, I've seen fairly recent used knives sell for more than the new list price. There is a 119 standard model on a popular auction site right now, and the bidding is up over $1000. I don't see the logic. Thoughts?

I've heard it could be folks trying to launder drug money..Or 2 bidders ON drugs lolol! But some extremely rich people bid on Ebay and it simply doesn't matter what it cost. If you have more money than you could count in a month if something strikes your fancy you just buy it.

Ok, makes sense that drugs are probably involved, one way or another 😁. If it is someone with way too much money buying up Bucks at those prices, I'd like to know their name lol

That last sentence is what I believe many sellers know. They know that it probably won't sell at their high price but they also know that it might for the reason that you stated. They aren't going to get an enormous price for it if they don't list it for an enormous price so they might as well try it and see if anybody bites.

Rhino, I now use the term "Waldemart" exclusively because of you. My kids hate it, they think it's a very "Dad" thing to say. Thanks.

You're welcome! It's a combination of paying respect to not mentioning non-paying advertisers on here plus a little Harry Potteresque evilness (in case it's not obvious).

And any time we can vex kids by being old, it's worth the effort.

Yes, I noted the Potter reference. It's perfect

I saw that as well. I always wonder how many of you are out there watching and bidding on the same items as me. I'll bet you guys see posts on the "Newest Buck thread" from time to time and say, "Yeah, I missed out on that one" or think "that guy overpaid"

Good point. And I've wondered the same thing.
If anyone on here is bidding on that particular knife, well, bless your heart. And if anyone here is the seller, congrats! I'm not mad or judging, just curious.

My personal favorite is the "Supreme" 112 listing for $300.00 to $700.00..If the seller has a 'make offer' I always offer $35.00 just to see if they got tired of relisting it. It fits my rare odd 112 collection..

I had to go look that one up. Its the one that says, "Supreme", right 😆? Its definitely rare, probably one of a kind.

If desired I could afford to pay a crazy price for a knife or anything else I want..... because I don't.....

A 35 dollar knife with a decal on the handle.
My recollection is a skateboard shop in NYC.
Marketing genius using the Harley Davidson type marketing model of selling lifestyle branded products at a premium price.
I've seen all sorts of SUPREME branded stuff, skateboards, knives, wallets, key chains, clothing items, even a minibike.
To a sensible person, none of it has any increased intrinsic value because of the label.

The "Supreme" 112 first popped up on Ebay 4 (?) years ago and always had a HUGE asking price. It was thought it could be a fake Buck at one point because the letters were so unlike Bucks normal format. Because the asking price was so out of line with the knife I wanted one in my rare, odd 112 collection almost as a joke. There was a used 'cheep' one 2 years ago at $250.00 and I made my biggest offer of $45.00 with shipping. I knew if I had it in my display it would attract attention from any 112 collector because of the stupid asking price lolol! The 112 IS real but I'm not positive the handle lettering was by Buck or a aftermarket company.
