I spent about 2 hours with my Doctor digging out a 1/2" long end of a toothpick out of my foot.

Not my favorite way to spend my morning...and it definitely limited my time in the shop. :(

Crazy kids of mine scattered around some toothpicks and I didn't know it. I was hustling through the house to get some shoes on....WHAM...I kicked the toothpick embedded in a rug so hard that it went straight in and broke off inside my foot.

I got out my Spyderco MicroDyad and some tweezers and set to work trying to get it out...to no avail. It was so deep, I could hardly find it. And just pinching/prodding the skin sent a shooting pain all the way up to my thigh.

Not your normal sliver.

So I call my Doc and checked myself in.

He worked on it for an hour and then gave up and had to take a break!

After checking on some other patients and then sticking me with local anisthetic again (hurt worse than getting the sliver...HAHAHA) about 15-30 min later, was able to pull it out.

Crazy....

So I'm kinda limping around today. Still able to get work done, but not moving as quick.

And I was supposed to be going on a hike tomorrow. Rats.

Anyway...here's a pic I took during the "break". They ended up widening the hole even more and since the sliver was straight in (not merely under the skin...more of a puncture wound) they had to go fairly deep to get it out. Yay....:(

Dan, I feel your pain. 3 years ago I was in the woods, heard something behind me, turned around too quickly in thick brush, poked my eye with a twig. I pulled it out and to make a long story short, 2 surgeries later to remove the piece from my cornea, 6 stitches for 6 weeks, and an infection, I was VERY lucky.

Dan, I really feel for you. I was walking down a city street when I felt a pain in my foot. Picked it up and saw a nailhead sticking out from the sole of the sneaker. I figure some rotten kids put it there point up, hoping someone would walk on it.

Ohhh ... TERRIBLE memories ... I did the same thing years ago. I was moving through the woods pretty quickly, off trail, and kinda ran into a branch. Good doctor, a couple of weeks later, and I was OK again.

Watch for infection!!!
A few years ago my son took a toothpick deep into the palm of his hand. Took about an hour for the Doc to get it out and he needed two stitches to close the wound. About three days later he had a rip-roaring staph infection that turned into weeks of IV antibiotics.

Must be the pine!!!

Remember: Pain is just weakness leaving the body!

:-)

Dan, feel better! Injuring the foot makes every step painful...I've had more ingrown toenails from jiu jitsu and running than I care to remember. It seems wimpy to complain about, but every step hurts!

Glad it got straightened out, take care!!

Reminds me when I was young running in the field close to my house, tripping and driving a wooden sliver though my hand.

My mom took me to the doctors, who then sent me to the hospital for surgery. It was not a pleasant experience at all.

Just make sure it doesn't get infected. My grandmother had a cut on the bottom of her foot that get infected, turned all black and awful smelling and they had to amputate it.

   YIKES!!!!

So it is Monday morning and my foot *still* hurts!

*ouch*

I have to limp around the shop...but at least I'm in the shop. :D

I did end up doing the 3 mile hike on Saturday....not my brightest moment....:foot:

Thankfully I did get some antibiotics from the Doc -expensive fancy ones too....LOL

I've been *fastidious* about changing the bandages and keeping infection out of the cut.

Here's the truly crazy part, though....

When I laid down to go to sleep that night....as soon as I closed my eyes...I could feel the Doc digging in my foot...!!! When I opened my eyes back up....went away. Closed 'em...came back. It was NUTS. Mind games...!

My kids left out some orange safty cones from a toy they had, wasnt paying attention where I was walking and stepped on it! It went all the way into my foot, about an inch long, half inch wide, kids were laughing hard! I had to pull it out myself and still get the kids ready for school!!!! Blood everywhwere, should have went to the doc, but I didnt. just packed it. I was limping for awhile after that. I wear slippers in the house all the time now, I suggest the same!

Thanks guys.

Sadly - still limping...:( :o

Supposed to be visiting the doc to get the stitches out tomorrow.

Dan, Could be worse bro!
Hope the foot heals up well. Takc care of yourself and stop kicking toothpicks! (EMPTY)Cans are better.

I did a really bad sliver in my left pointer finger. I couold not dig it ouut. Tried cutting it out. No good.

Almost 5 years later it is still there. It is a bit softer, but still twinges every once in a while when I bump it.

not a sliver but i got shot in my right eye with an airsoft gun i had taken my glasses off to de-frost them and my buddy popped around a corner and shot me. 2 weeks in bed and many appointments later i can see perfectly again left eye is 20/24 right is 20/20. Thank the lord. ( funny thing ran through my head the second i got hit, im not gonna be able to shoot again)

I've had a couple of similar incidents with toothpicks and safety pins. The toothpick wasn't as bad as yours. Mine remained intact and I was able to pull it out. But I remember more than once driving safety pins to the bone. My socks would pick them up off the floor when walking and they'd go right into the ball of the foot. I was able to pull them out too.
Good luck healing.
