Crazy idea: Demko Manix?

I have a full size lockback Manix, which is my favorite folder and I kinda miss the full size Manix in the Spyderco catalog. I love the blade length and the handle shape.

So, what about a new version of the full size Manix, with a big sturdy Demko Tri-ad lock on it? When you think of it, it almost seems like a pretty natural development of the original, thick lockback of the Manix 1. Nothing wrong about the CBB lock of course, it is excellent, but I've always been a sucker for lockbacks and the Demko lock seems like an improved version of it. I see no problem having two different locking mechanisms on the small and big versions of the knife neither, just like the Millie and Paramillie have different locks. I really like the sprint run system Spyderco has going with the Manix 2 now as well. A sprint run version of a Demko lock full size Manix with carbon fiber scales, thick titanium liners and an M4 blade.. Yup, my dream folder. (nothing wrong with dreaming :D)

I suggested something like this for the Sage series. But a hard use folder with be the ultimate I think. This is my dream folder too, in addition to a Military with that lock.

I think the Tri-Ad lock is pretty much the patented property of Cold Steel so I don't think its likely to happen any time soon.

Yeah I'd love very much to see Cold Steel license it to Spyderco and others too if willing even if Andrew can't do some collaborative models with other companies. For all I know he could collaborate with others but when I ordered my custom from him he said he can only make 30 Triad customs per year due to the contract with CS. Cold Steel apparently bought the patent to the Thumb Plate opener from Andrew also.

As I recall Lynn and Sal get on very well with each other so it seems to me that if anyone would one day be able to get the lock to use on some models its him but the real question is whether he feels the need to do that or not. Right now being so new I doubt CS is much interested in letting it out there.

I would love to see it though. The Triad is an awesome lock.

That would be awesome!!
Big Chunk of thick FFG S30V (with a Tanto option)
Tri-ad Lock
Throw some Titanium in those liners somewhere
and some high textured G-10 or CF scales
and wave that sucker to!!! (Got to get Mr. Emerson in on it to)

That is cool to know that Sal and Lynn are getting on well. After seeing the Triad lock tests, I was speechless. The knife that went through testing on that video went mostly undamaged after several punishing tests.

So when I imagine all those beautiful exotic steels being used (CPM-M4, S35VN, CPM-S90V) it's the right recipie for a homerun. Thanks for sharing details STR

I think it would be a very smart move as well! It would sure put spyderco on the forefront of the harduse folder world! And with all those great steels that spyderco uses, it could be a real winner:D

I'd love to see this happen too. I'm a fan of that lock & I'd love to see these companies working together.

I would rather see a better lock like the compression,or the ball lock that
is stronger pound for pound IMO.:barf:

The ball bearing lock is a very strong lock and I bet just as strong as the Triad lock. Some may like the back lock style better but I don't see the need to pay to license a different type of lock when Spyderco has some of the strongest locks out there. I know Sal tests his locks and it would be interesting to know how they are tested and what they rate at. Regardless, they are much stronger than what a folding knife should be asked to endure.

Edit: yes I know the Triad lock is not a regular back lock but it operates in a similar way.

M4 and Manix platform have me sold for hard use. The lock will be adequate, whether it's comp, ball or backlock.

It becomes a question of collaboration. I find that a number of collaborations turn out really well. One such example is the Janich/Snody Spyderco Ronin.

I also would like to see a return of the old big Manix, with the Tri-ad lock, IMO it would be the ultimate Manix.

For me, I would like to see a Manix with these characteristics:
-Tri-ad lock
-D2 full flat grind (4mm), with bronze washers
-steel liners
-black textured G10
-old handle design (the big Manix 1 handle)

Economically, it probably wouldn't work.

Sal would have to pay extra royalties in order to be allowed to pay to retool for a model which has already been discontinued due to lack of sales.

Not the best recipe for success.
