I had a crazy idea of using a karambit as a field dressing knife for deer. Basically I wanted to know people's opinions on this idea.

It can be done but esp.for the fine stuff you will find everything you cut will be pulled inward and tend to pile up in the joint area, especially if there is room between the end of the edge and the handle. The curve serves its purpose, pulling things 'in.' Certainly you can do the precision cutting with it though. The point will tend to snag a bit more than with a drop point or similar.

If it was a good idea, people would be doing it already. People have been dressing animals for a long time. People have been using karambits for a long time.

But give it a try! Maybe it'll work for you.

Obviously it's not the right tool for the job. But you can clean a deer with a sharp piece of flint if you want to so I would imagine it would get the job done.

Point snagging, bunching of tissue, punctures of stuff you do not want to puncture. I can see all these happening. By all means, give it a shot and let us know if/how it works. I'd be interested in the results, one way or the other.

I think the sharpfinger design would be much more to your liking...where the point does NOT get in the way.

no doubt you could do it but it's a less than ideal tool for the job. it would be fine for zipping open the body cavity, no better than a normal knife but it's going to be a hindrance when cutting the diaphragm, esophagus and around the anus IMO.
