Crazy idea????

Let me know how crazy this idea is.

I've got a Buck Strider Trainer (Bos ATS-34) w/ a rounded tip. Previous owner sharped it, but not well enough. I got it cheap and don't care too much if I ruin it (well I care a little).

I'm seriously considering grinding the tip into a tanto and then working hard to sharpen the whole thing. I have access to tools that I believe are suitable to the task.

What are your collective thoughts on this idea.

Oh, forgot to tell you. I've NEVER done anything like this so it will be a challenge. Anything I need to know about would be greatly appreciated.

If you have no sharpening experience I would say leave it alone or let someone else do it.

I've got none. I realize I may botch the crap out of this thing, but I won't use it as it is. It's probably not worth having s/o else do it.

Having someone else do it would mean that it would be done right.

I guess the question becomes who badly could I mess it up? In theory, it doesn't seem all that impossible - if I've got guides on the sharpening/honing stones. Now the re-grind from drop point to tanto would have to be done on a much stronger stone.
Any idea how much something like this costs to have s/o else do it?

Oops, missed the part that said "trainer"

Changing it into a tanto shape is not going to be easy but if you feel up to the challange then go for it.

There's no doubt in my mind that I'm NOT up to the challenge, but I figure I don't have much to lose - and a lot to gain. I love the feel of the knife, but don't like the sharpness. (and I HATE the rounded tip)

Yeah, it seems to have been. It says BOS ATS-34 on the blade. I've seen these online as being suitable for sharpening.

If you're going to use stones it's going to take a century to do, if you have XX coarse DMT diamond stones, it might be okay. If you're going to use a belt grinder, remember to keep dunking the blade in water so it stays cool.
