my 9 year old just told me he wants a knife just like my sebenza for Christmas. I was planning on a 511 or Mora. what do you guys think?

I don't know how big your child is but my kids have Izulas. They are a good size for their small hands. They're also inexpensive should it get lost.

Izula, Eskabar, scrapivore w/the back corners knocked off, Condor baby bushlore all fit little hands well without breaking the bank. So does a Brusletto Baldur.

folders - I'd look at the skyline. in his eyes it'll look enough like a sebbie but not break the bank and still be decent steel

HA! I hear ya brotha...

I told my daughter (in a blatant bribe to hunt with me) that I'd get her a Randall Made knife when she shoots her first deer. Never expected her to do it at the tender age of twelve... Still, it was completely worth it! She has the fever now and I've got a hunting buddy.

Fixed blades are harder to lose than folders, though... :D

folder-wise I was always picturing a SAK. But I know the first knife I ever got excited about was my grandpa's big lockback. that was the first blade I ever sharpened

maybe between birthday and Christmas I can sneak in a SAK, locking folder, 3ish" fixed blade and a 511, with something larger in a few years. Wifey tolerates all of mine so I might get away with it. She did say she would like something we could personalize

Be sure that he has proper knife handling skills. I got a Zippo knife for my 6th Xmas, and camping that summer I proceeded to try to amputate my thumb. I DID learn some valuable lessons that day. #1 - Always cut away from yourself. #2 - 7 yr olds have a lot of blood in them.

I do hope you get him a knife. And that he uses it well. It is part of being a boy. Have fun and be safe!!

I learned my lesson cutting a cucumber off of a vine when I was probably 8 or so. nothing serious but I'll never forget it.

My nine year old daughter has a Fiddleback Ladyfinger and my six year old has a Cold Steel Finn Bear. Do what you can and make sure they know how to use it is all I can add.

He loved the LWRC.
I'm not worried at all about him having some fun with dangerous boy toys when he is supervised but I don't think he is ready for unrestricted access. He is still too easily distracted, especially with the younger ones around. I'm more worried about something left unsheathed or open than I am about him cutting himself when he's trying to cut something else

The 511 would probably be a good choice as the handles are on the small side, for my big hands anyway. It's lightweight and SR101 is good steel that will hold a edge. The Rodent Solution might also be a good choice. Since there is a potential for loss, a fixed blade with Kydex and Tek/Loc would probably be harder to misplace although, there is no guarantee with children. Like other's have stated, teach the child safety procedures with handleing a knife. I gave my 8 yr old a cheap knife for Christmas when he was 6. I went through the basic's with him. The last thing I said was......... NEVER BRING THIS TO SCHOOL. Guess who called when school resumed a few day's later???? He got expelled for 3 day's for bringing it. It was 6 month's before he got to handle it again and learned a lesson.

My boy's first knife : a dull edge with a round tip. His mother is more dangerous than the sharpest knife!

Great stuff mate, I have my two Godsons Puma folders when they were born ... ;) Both use them in the bush now. Goddaughter has the bug and cracked the shytes recently because her father and brother both have "good" knives they take bush and she did not. So I have just finished up her Christmas gift, a tanker grey Izula with a set of krypto glow scales and a venom green lanyard. She also got a striker and some other survival kit to go with it. She is 11 now. Her older brother got a complete set of cleaning gear (fixed rod and brushes jags etc plus and Otis kit for the bush) for the CZ .22 magnum he got earlier in the year.

I leaned all about sharp things when I was about 8. Mum was a surgical sister and kept a full set of instruments at home. I was warned that under NO circumstances was I to play with them and in particular the scalpels. Yeah right... !!! So when I opened up my left index finger knuckle all the way to the bone I could not bring myself to show her, cry or do anything that would mean she saw it. Thankfully I snuck off and explained my dilemma to another nursing sister (who probably told my mum but I never heard about it) and got it patched up. I had to keep it hidden for near on two weeks..!!!!

How about a Buck Vantage or Paradigm. On a side note, my daughter lost the first two knives, that I gave her. My recommendation is, don't give him anything that you would get upset if he lost it.

I started my girls off young on knifes and guns both. Now everytime I get a new knife or gun the oldest tries to claim it as hers. At least I got a hunting, camping, shooting budy out of the deal.

The izula does make a really good knife for a little one, I've given several of my friends kids them.

what do you guys think of the Bark River Bravo neckers? I already have several unused scrapivores and swamp wardens, but I really like the optional scales on the bravo necker
