What is the best waki or samurai type of sword I could buy for $1500? Someone mentioned Angel Sword but they seem to have mixed feedback online.

Thanks

First of all, forget Angel Sword

Second, what will you be doing with it?

There are Katana, Wakizashi, and objects with similar shapes like Busse AK47, Ruck, and custom tactical wakizashis that are non-traditional, and better at some kinds of things.

Are you looking at a traditional blade for collecting or tameshigiri, or just a SLO for cutting stuff?

Well it's actually not for me. It's for a friend who somehow thinks I know a lot more than I really do about almost everything. :) I gotta get back to work now so I'll check back in an hour or two.
Thanks Again

$1500 could probably get you a custom shop satin Busse AK47 and a nice fancy custom sheath from Rainwalker or Dwayne Puckett Aka leatherman aka armoralleather, if they'd like something modern and waki length. That is what I would want.

If it's for someone who knows a lot about swords, you're going to get a whole different answer.

But at that price point, there are good options from Hanwei, Dynasty Forge, Bugei, and a few others, as well as the potential to have a non-traditional custom made.

If he's looking to chop at trees with a sword or otherwise have something cool that will get used hard, go for something tough and cheap (Cheness Kaze or Hanwei Practical Plus spring to mind), or tough and spendy (Bussekin). If he actually knows what he's doing, and wants something that will do some serious cutting, look for a good tamahagane blade, or something similar. I personally think the Hanwei Tiger Elite is one of the better blades in that kind of price range, especially considering you can sometimes find them for around 800-850 shipped. But the best Japanese swordsman I know (he's a 7th level dan, IIRC) is of the opinion that length and balance matter on an individual basis, which makes it tough to buy something online. There are several folks more knowledgeable than I about this topic, but at least you can get an idea of companies that are generally well-respected.

I'm just trying to get the sheath ordered, and the dream will be realized :)

good taste my friend

Rainwalker does some fine work. Very inspirational. I need to figure out how to do inlay work, and make something spiffy for my gladii...

You saying you can make a decent (if undecorated) leather sheath? if you can, i might want to buy something from ya

Doesn't Busse charge $100/inch for custom shop work? Or are they going for that on the exchange?

That is for custom designs. If they have blanks already they charge more in line with the release prices, adjusted for exotic materials or additional grinding.

I have maybe 5 or 6 custom shop knives that are a lot closer to $30-$50 per inch

I would advise against angel sword. Not quite sure how they came to command such a ridiculous price point, and I don't think $1500 would be enough with them anyways.

Thanks for the feedback. I think I'll send him a link to this thread and shatter his delusions of my omniscience. :D

Can you elaborate about the Angel sword with some details about the sword ?

Angel sword is a brand, not a sword. It's a brand of extremely high priced swords and knives of average construction quality and very slightly above average materials.

The prices on their larger swords routinely exceed $5000, and even their knives often exceed $1500 for small, relatively unadorned designs with few distinguishing features

(did i put that diplomatically enough?)
