Crazy way to get a coal

Well, I have to admit I thought I've seen it all before, but this was a new one to me. Kudos!

That’s brilliant!

What’s the principle? Doesn’t seem like enough friction or compression to cause that much heat, but there it is.

You can substitute fine charcoal or ashes for the rust also. I saw this on a video where ashes were used by Creek Stewart iirc.--KV

I went and found a video doing it with ashes. Fantastic!

I’m not sure I could improvise two flat, smooth surfaces in the back country, but for some reason I love the idea of this method as a last ditch attempt that I would prefer over a bow drill.

Maybe if you found an old building and carried a couple pieces of plank with you. People carry their bow drill set after making one. This also might not be a back country skill only thing. Pretty neat though.--KV

That’s the likely way to get it to work, scavenged lumber. I was wondering if I could split a 2”-3” branch and smooth out the flat parts by carving. I might try it some day when I want to set up camp and spend an hour trying to make fire. :)

Might be able to split and then abrade to flatten on a large flat rock.--KV
