Creating a distal taper w/ stock removal?

First, I'd like to thank you guys for all the great info that's been posted. The wealth of knowledge here is fantastic.

I'm attempting to teach myself how to make stock removal blades (anyone near Pasadena, CA who like to mentor a beginning hobbyist, I'd love some help!). I'd eventually like to forge, but that's out of the question for a bit.

Is there a good way to grind a blade with a distal taper with an upswept or inline tip? would it be possible, or advisable to profile the blade, taper the tang, taper the blade and then grind the bevels?

Thanks gents!

Jay

Just taper it as you grind. It's all about pressure and angles.

If a blade couldn't be distally tapered with stock-removal grinding, you wouldn't be able to grind a forged blade either... Just a thought. :)

Shane, I was just going to type that :). A nice grinding magnet helps. It also keeps your finger tips from being scorched.

Thanks for the replies, guys.

Are you using the magnet on the blade, and holding the tang, then?

Nick: If I'm reading you right, I have two options, then: 1--increase the pressure as I get closer to the tip or 2--increase the angle between the blade and the platen. Is that correct?

1. Yes
2. Yes
:D

Mainly you have to practice, and figure out what works for you. I tend to change where I apply pressure more than I try to change the angle. I apply more pressure towards the spine as I move towards the tip.
Also, on blades with a curved profile where the tip is swept up above the spine, you have to rotate the blade a little bit to keep the edge somewhat square to the wheel (especially on hollow grinding).

Thanks Matt!

Is it kosher if I post some pics of what I've been working on and ask for diagnostic assistance? Hopefully I'm going to get some shop time this weekend.
