Rather than pay $10 to change my name, would it be OK to just open a new account with a different name and stop using the old one?

Registering multiple accounts can result in a permanent ban from the site. Upgrade your current account. :)

You can always have your account name changed afterward.

EDIT: I just saw that Basic Member is $10. And after upgrading to that, I can change my name, right?

OK, thanks.

Just to be clear:

If/when I upgrade my account to a Gold membership or something like that, I will have the opportunity to change my username that appears on my posts?

Or by "upgrade," did you mean just paying the $10 to get it changed?

Name changes are $10 whatever your membership level -- you don't get a name change thrown in for upgrading to Gold or any other level. It's a separate charge. Higher level memberships allow you to change your use title but not username.

You CAN abandon your current account by logging out and never logging back in. Then you can register a new account. As long as you aren't posting with both accounts, you're OK.

You would lose your "seniority" and post count, neither very high at this time. If you go for the $10 name change, the new name will be shown with the 2009 begin date and your old posts will be available to search under it.
