Hi all, I was directed here by Milsurp. I came from Archerytalk.com I was talking to him about creating my own sheath for a knife that I bought. Its an average knife. 6 in skinning knife. I was wondering If you professionals could give me a few tips and tricks on creating my own work of art. Thanks, Josh....

here is what I posted in Archery Talk

I bought this knife Ebay (still in mail) The sheath that comes with it is junk. I do not have the funds to have a leather worker create me a sheath. I have deciede to make my own. Anyone know how to make one and give me a few helpful hints. Here are the materials I have:
Leather- It is Deer skin;cape
Thread- plenty and different kinds
Knife- it is a skinning knife so the sheath will be very curved
.... anything else???

I would like my sheath to SECURLY hold the knife, look decent, have a belt loop for carrying. Thank you Kindly, Josh

I would get 8/9 oz veg. tanned leather. GEt some dye and neatsfoot oil. Also get saddle stitching needles and wax coated thread. You will also need a groover and an edge beveler. In the background is what I make using these tools only.

You will also need to figure out how you will do your holes. Punch them (traditional and I need to learn) or drill them with a hand drill (some will frown upon).

Josh,
Welcome to the forums! In addition to the nice tutorials PJ posted and Brian's good advice see the sheath section of the "How to make knives" page that Dan Gray hosts. Give'em all a read, decide on a plan of attack and go for it. I'm sure if you hit any snags you'll be able to find the help needed to reslove them here.
Regards,
Greg

Let us know how it goes.....

And show us what you come up with. I have found in several other hobbies that the new folks tend to come up with some very unique ideas on how to do things. Some are fantastic!
