Does anybody know how/where to obtain a credit report? I have a few questions I need answered and I can't say I've had to deal with this stuff before...

There are three credit reporting companies. By law they must give you a free credit report every year if you request it. You can also pay to get one too. If you are denied credit, (loan, credit card) you are entitled to a credit report.

PS, I haven't been up to Houghton for 2 years, Has anyone bought and re-opened the Keleva cafe in Hancock? How about Genos?

What are the names of these companies?

Sorry, don't know about Keleva or Genos. I don't cross the bridge much as I left my car downstate for the winter (having some brake line and oil pan issues...among many others) in storage. So I pretty much stick to Houghton and on-campus.

i believe the government website is annualcreditreport.com

it will connect you to all 3 credit reporting companies, you can check it annually for free, any more than that and you need to pay.

also they don't tell you your "score" but rather inquiries, credit limits, % of credit used, etc. The score is usually an extra bought separately from the companies.

Thats cool. I'm not worried about the score (right now), but rather curious to see if a debt has showed up. I was never billed or contacted or notified, but according to some leasing bullshit I'm supposed to owe money...

The three credit reporting agencies are Experian, Equifax, and Transunion.

All three offer a credit monitoring service which will alert you immediately to any changes such as the opening of a new account in your name. Everyone should subscribe to such a service.

Everyone is entitled to one free copy per year of your credit report from each agency. Spread them out. January it's Experian, May it's Equifax, September it's Transunion, something like that.

If your state allows it, put holds on your credit report. This means that nobody can get access to it without your permisssion. This means that you can't walk into a car dealership and drive out in a car financed in your name. It delays credit applications because you have to approve the request to review your credit report. It also is a great way to stop fraud. If your state doesn't allow it, take the time right now to write to your state legislators and demand this.

It really a shame that you have to pay to have your car alarm monitored so that if your car is stolen you'll be notifed and it can be tracked, you have to pay an alarm company to monitor your house so that if it's broken into police will be called and you'll be notiifed, and you have to pay to have your identity monitored too. This is the cost of crime and it affects all of us.
