Cricket or Chive? Which do you prefer?

I've had the Chive for a few weeks, and a stainless steel Cricket is on the way.

For those who have both, what do you like about each, and which do you carry more often? Why?

I like the Chive for it's size, the assisted opening, weight, look, and lock. I can't wait to get the Cricket for the VG-10 steel, spyder hole, and spyder clip.

Thanks.

For everyday carry, my favorite is the chive. I love the quick opening mechanism, and I think that it is balanced well for a finger knife. Since I wear a suit all day, the size is very convienient. I think as a utility tool and as a self-defense tool, I'd go with the chive over the cricket. For me, the quick-opening mechanism is a major plus, because in a self defense situation, the ffaster you can deploy your tool, the better. I like the shape and feel of the chive over the cricket as well.

My thoughts...:)

I've just got my Cricket SS and I'm seriously thinking of getting a Rainbow Chive so I'll be interested in the responses too. I like the Cricket, it's small and light and fits and carries easily in my pocket, and I'm the sort of person who doesn't normally like to have things clanking around in my pockets. It's become a sort of high tech worry bead, I find myself holding on to it and flicking it over and fiddling with the hole and suchlike. Strange blade shape but cuts really well.

at this small size though, i dont think that you can really notice a difference through normal use..

Li'l bro snapped the tip off a cricket once. Wanted a ten spot to get it taken care of.

No such problem with the Chive. And if said problem does occur, it costs nothing more than postage.

The question of steel choice doesn't enter my mind. It's a small carry piece. Ain't gonna be carving nails or butchering elk with it, so the Chive steel is fine and dandy with me. Quick and easy to sharpen, holds an edge longer than I need for this size knife.

I prefer the Chive.

I might have to pick up a Rainbow Chive now. :) I have been carring a SS PE Cricket as an EDC with my BM710HSSR. The Cricket is nice for when you don't want to pull out a large knife that might freak people out. After reading this thread I went down to the basement as I had some goodies from Sears Hardware to open. For the heck of it I touched up the Cricket on the Sharpmaker and then started slicing open a screw driver I got that comes with a bunch of bits, mainly torx bits (wonder what they're for). So I'm slicing the shrink wrap plastic away from the card board when all the sudden I feel pain. Here there was an area where there was no cardboard (like a window) behind the handle of the driver. So the blade went right through the shrink wrap and right into my pinky! Lemme tell ya, the Cricket has a sharp little beak! Blood starting flowing, but I finished opening the driver and then went for a little band aid. :) BTW, anyone ever try the liquid band aid stuff? It works GREAT on small cuts. I'm out though so I had to settle for a traditional band aid.

Listen guys, ease up will you. I'm trying NOT to spend more money on bloody knives and you lot keep going on about how great the chive is!

Aaarrrgghhh.. what's the use, I guess I'll be going to the New Graham website again ....

You will like it.I an getting my son a rainbow chive for Christmas.

I like them both as gents folders, but would actually prefer the Cricket for last-ditch defense. Its a wicked little slicer.

Best regards,

Argyll

I have both and while the Chive is fun to play with the Cricket is clipped to my pocket most of the time. It's a really cool little knife :)

Ditto. There's not much in Kershaw's lineup that I find really compelling except for the Chive! Great steel or not, I'd pick the chive over the cricket (and I do feel the cricket is another solid design). I like everything about the cricket -- the blade shape is incredibly useful and what I want in a little knife, the handle is fantastically easy to handle given its small size, overall workmanship is solid for the price. Plus the speedsafe is fun on this little guy. And the option of either the rainbow or black chive help make it a visual feast. Just plain cool little knife.

using a small knife for defense is the least of my worries, as I have my makarov on me at all times.

That being said, I just ordered a Cricket.. I'll probably get a Chive one of these days, as I was very interested in them as well.

Boron Black is the way to go with the Chive. Very classy IMHO.

My favorite between the two is the Cricket, and I have owned both. It is just so much more useful.

I would hate to see what someone who broke the tip off of a Cricket would do to a Chive. I think most will agree that the Cricket is sturdier than the Chive, and it was certainly my experience.

The novelty of the Chive wears off while the usefulness of the Cricket reveals itself more and more with use.
